T400: Sometimes Black Screen after standby (win64 x64)

2009-11-16, 19:46 PM

hey there. after upgrading to win7 prof 64-Bit (fresh install) everything runs really smooth and fine on my T400. awesome!

but sometimes i have a strange issue. after waking up the system from standby the screens keeps black (off in my opinion). no chance to reactivate it only by restarting.

does anyone also has this behaviour? im using all the latest drivers from the lenovo site and have switchable gfx disabled by bios.

regards from germany

My new T400 (Windows 7 64bit) does the same thing.  I found that if I manually put the machine in sleep mode after attempting to wake it up from standy by, then wake it up from the sleep mode, the normal screen returns.  It's not a fix but until a solution is found, it might save you a little time from rebooting.

FIxed!

The latest BIOS, 3.11 dated 12-21-09 fixes this issue completely on my T400.

I have the same problem, and the same solution works for me.

There was a long thread about this a while ago.  Numerous people are/were having this problem.  I see below that a poster says bios 3.11 has fixed it.  For some reason my Lenovo Update program never told me Bios 3.11 was available.  IT never told me about the new Power Manager either.  Odd.

Anyway, I have downloaded bios 3.11 and will post back once I have determined if this problem has been fixed on my machine.

Hi dmccombs, The latest BIOS fixed the problem for bwpotter. I suggest you give it a try.

I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

I upgraded top Bios 3.11 and I still have the problem.

I left the machine for about an hour.  When I came back, the screeen was black.  Moving the mouse does nothing.  I put the computer to sleep, then woke it up, and only then did the screen come back on.

There have been several instances were the Lenovo Update program failed to notify me of the latest patches and updates.  I no longer rely on it and instead have bookmarked my specific model Lenovo Support & Downloads page; then periodically, I visit the page to see if any new updates have posted.  There have been three or four instances of new updates that Lenovo's Update program missed.

Regarding the BIOS update not correcting your black screen problem, the only thing that comes to mind is whether the latest video drivers are installed on your machine?  If it's like mine - 64-bit, switchable graphics - try verifying whether the latest video update (8.641.1.1 drivers) helps.

Bwpotter,

Thanks for the suggestions.

The idea to bookmark the page for my specific computer is a good one.  While the support page identifies my computer, it misidenties the OS.  when I go to chang eth OS, it makes me reselect the computer, model, make, etc.

Because the Auto update wasn't working, I had the original ATI driver.  I have updated them to the latest drivers and will retest.

Thaks again for the great suggestions.

To All,

So, out of the Lenovo Utilites, are there any that actually work without bugs?  The Lenovo utilites lay over currently existing Windows 7 functionality, supposedly adding functions and/or somehow making things easier.  But by the time you debug them or figure out why they use so many resources, you have wasted much more time than you have gained.  Rant Off (for now)

Well, I have the 3.11 Bios and the Video driver listed here and I still have the issue.  If I leave for my compter for an hour or so, then come back, the screen is blank.  Keystrokes or mouse movements don't turn it back on.  If I put it to sleep, then reawaken it, everything is fine.

If anyone else has any ideas, please post back.
