T400 - Vista Home Basic - Hangs/Freezes Randomly

2009-11-10, 18:33 PM

I started installing my own apps once I got my laptop and I noticed it did freeze on me a couple of times even when the laptop was new.  I didn't think much of it...

I am seeing the freezing/hanging a lot more often now.  The the mouse cursor is movable but nothing else is responsive when this happens.  I have to perform a hard reboot to get my system back again.

I do not know what causes this but one app that causes it all the time is PC Doctor.  It displays its startup message about some connection engine but then the system is not responsive no matter how long I wait.

Also, my System Update app does not start.  It complains about a Runtime Error involving the VC++ library.  When I looked in the installed programs list, VC++ 2005 and 2008 are both installed.  I assume some application I installed added the 2008 version from looking at the time stamp.  Perhaps Quicken or similar app could have installed it.

Other times, it hangs right from the start when Windows is starting and I try to start an app (nothing specific - Firefox, etc.)

Could this cause any issues?

I tried running memtest86+ as well ---->  The first time it froze just like Vista at about the 82% mark.  I ran it 4 times since then and it passed every time.  Not sure what that means.

Since I couldn't run PC Doctor in Windows, I downloaded the bootable CD version.  I'm about to try that tonight and see what happens.

Does anyone have any clues?

More details about your configuration & the heavy softwares installed if there are will help people to answer your questions.

BTW, Vista really sucks, eating too much memory.

Sure.

I have a 7417-CTO model - 2.24 GHz CPU - 3 GB RAM - 320 GB Drive.

I have all the factory software installed as well as some of the following:

Antivir

Malwarebytes

Spywareblaster

Quicken 2010

HDD Life

Firefox

Daemon Tools Lite

LimeWire

Zinio

Raxco PerfectDisk

UltraISO

VideoLAN

I'll add to this list when I get home.  I can't remember them all.

You can go to

"Control panel --> AdministiveTools  --> Event Viewer"

and check if there some useful information, e.g., errors in Windows Logs (application, system...)

Re: T400 - Vista Home Basic - Hangs/Freezes Randomly

2009-11-11, 5:24 AM

I encountered another hanging/freezing incident and I have all the Error/Warning events from the event logs.

I opened a bunch of apps and starting running them, then I froze the computer.  The actual freezing happen close to 9:00pm but most of these errors appear to be at least a couple of minutes before that... so I'm not sure if they point to the root cause.

I have read in a few posts that other people had issues with the hard disk.  Could that be a cause as well for these random freezes?

Hey jbum,

If it happened to mine, I would like to try,

a) Update the system through ThinkVantage.

b) If the problem still exists, disable the power manager (some people have such issues although it may not be officially approved).

c) We hope it's not, but hardware, sometimes, does cause such problems. Then it would be better to call lenovo people.

BTW, I'm not an expert, but hope it helps you even a little bit. I'm also coming here to complain my T400....

Hey thanks a bunch for your help.

I will definitely try those things out.  I was updating things one by one through System Update and it froze a few times... sometimes on the same items like Intel Matrix Storage driver updates.

For those items, I had to download it manually and install it in "Safe Mode".  Then it worked.  This is becoming more of a headache than I really wanted.

I'm already getting my mobo replaced because of some defect in my model type that doesn't let you feed video out through the docking station's DVI output.  Maybe I should get the whole system replace. :)
