T400 hard drive warranty / type

2008-11-19, 23:27 PM

I want to replace my 160gb 7200rpm internal hard drive with a 320gb 7200rpm internal.  I have two questions:

1) Will this void the factory / accidental damage warranty?  Obviously if I butcher something, yes.  And obviously the new HDD won't be covered.  But if my GfX card or screen goes after I've  changed hard drives will they be covered?

2) What is the internal connector for a T400 hard drive?  Will any 2.5" SATA work?  Or is it PATA?

Thanks, even if you can only answer one it'd be greatly appreciated :)

I suppose I can use 43R1980 for my SATA ultra bay adapter if I can't change the internal--or, probably use both.

Welcome to the forum!

You will not void the warranty on your T400, or any other ThinkPad, by replacing the hard drive. Your new drive will not be covered by Lenovo, but most drives come with manufacturer's warranty which is 3-5 years.

Connection is SATA in all T series from T60 on. Any laptop spec'd SATA drive will work just fine, you know your needs and your budget the best.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

George

Re: T400 hard drive warranty / type

Thank you.  This leads me to one other question.  I want to keep my Vista install but I heard the T400 comes without a disc to reinstall.  If I swap out the 160gb drive for a new 320gb drive will I be able to reinstall Vista on the machine (or, more to the point, dual boot it with a smaller Linux partition).  I don't want to have to buy Vista again (obviously).

The repartitioning part is somewhat important because it makes a disc clone more difficult (yes?) and also, I have heard that Vista gets finnicky with changing its partition after it has been installed.

Thanks :)
