T400 is Stuck on Thinkpad Startup Screen

2011-01-12, 13:25 PM

Had the laptop for 11 months no issues, I woke up to find the computer stuck on the startup screen. Tried rebooting, took out the battery, tried it pluged in, unpluged and it keeps stopping at the startup screen. Any suggestions?

Hello mate,

Unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery.

Then, you push the power button 10 times in a row at one second intervals.

Next, you push and hold the power button for 30 seconds.

Then you put the battery back in and push the power button to turn on the computer.

See if it works.

1. Check your USB ports and see whether they are damaged, i.e. bent pins, or pins touching others.

Sounds like your harddisk has some problem or the memory cards have some small issue.

I normally take out the memory SODIMM, clean the gold pins, exchange their positions and slot them back in to test if it boots. Sound weird, but over 20 years of using computers, this happended to me a few times ha ha.

If it is not the memory cards, then next potential culprit is the harddisk.

If you are handy, get some software that checks the SMART data of the harddisk to see if there is any problem, this software should be on CDROM/DVDROM or USB so that you can boot up , press F12 and boot from the device to check the harddisk.

Worst come to worst you need to reformat and reisntall everything.

I've seen this in a few instances myself where the USB ports have been damaged and the unit is stuck on the Lenovo splash screen.

If that's indeed where it's freezing at and your not able to boot to CD or get into BIOS, check your USB ports to make sure none are damaged or bent.  Otherwise not much you can do aside form take it for service.

This was exactly the problem in my case.

Someone had rammed a USB stick in and it caught and bent the pins up.

Well, it didn't go in nicely, so they took it out and rammed it in again and curled the pins up against the casing of the USB port...causing a short.

I got a pushpin out and bent the USB pins back down away from the casing.  The port is ruined and is now unuseable (thanks RICK!), but the laptop is now booting into Windows.

After I dissassembled my laptop for my semi annual cleanup it started getting "stuck" the same way,I feared the worst and assumed my Harddisk might have been damaged when I took it out.
I decided to check online as a desperate end result.
I wish to thank you for your solution as it was this advice that enabled me to repair this issue!

I first placed only one DIMM and the issue remained,
Then, I used the 2nd one and the pc booted properly,
Then I installed both DIMM in place and the issue was fully resolved.

USB ports have been damaged. I fixed them with the small Scre Driver and it all worked well.

Thanks a lot to the community, I was afraid that I need to take to the suport and going to cost $$$.
