T400 new user questions - WWAN and graphics drivers (split from other thread)

2008-08-21, 18:01 PM

Jhem,

A few qns here:

1. How do I activate the WWAN - I don't see the WWAN in device manager and the WWAN indicator next to the bluetooth indicator under the LCD is not lighted, furthermore the ThinkVantage mobile broadband application does not detect any device?

2. Is the WWAN card in the T400 HSDPA based?

3. Can it accept any ol' 3G SIM card or does it have to be a HSDPA data SIM?

4. There seems to be some issue with the recovery discs not installing the graphics drivers - both Intel x4500 as well as ATI Mobility Radeon HD3470 when they are used to perform a clean install\complete recovery. My university tech guys were the ones who informed me of this issue when I performed the recovery and experienced the above (they contacted Lenovo). They assured me that they could resolve the problem by reinstalling the university image. However I would still like to know if Lenovo is working on a solution and if they will re-issue new recovery discs.

Greatly appreciate any feedback

Note: I moved this post from the tail of another thread so it could get proper exposure. -Admin

Zac,

Your machine as built and delivered doesn't come equipped with WWAN, although it's upgradable.

I'm just learning about the video driver problems, I hope to have an answer for you soon.

Regards,

James

Dear Jhem,

By "doesn't come equipped with WWAN" do you mean it doesn't have the internal WWAN PCI express card installed? And by "upgradable" do you mean it can be installed on request?

Regards,

Zac

Zachareth,

If your looking for the ATI drivers, we are working on them and expect to have them up on the web by middle of next week if all goes well.

Thanks for your patience.

Mark

I'm curious on the pricing of adding a WWAN card. Do I have to locate the local service centre for assistance on this or..?

OOT: zachareth, you bought the Thinkpad from NUS too?

Hi Coolrock,

Yup I did purchase my T400 from the National University of Singapore (NUS) tender. I called Lenovo Singapore about the WWAN issue. It seems our Singapore model is NOT WWAN upgradable at all! The technical guy informed me that while most T400 types have the empty internal slot for addition of a PCI mini express card, our 2768-AA6 type does not! It is a specially configured education model. I confirmed this with our NUS Lenovo service branch.

I was informed by the NUS Lenovo tech guys that whoever performed the recovery with recovery discs, besides having graphics problems, would also no longer be able to use the Blue ThinkVantage button at startup which I tried and confirmed. It seems it will take several months to get all the fixes done and posted online. Plus the guys frankly told me they foresaw more problems to come.

This is my first Thinkpad and I was initially quite excited to get it as ThinkPads have a reputation for reliability. However, I am frankly very disappointed with my experience.

I have already returned my T400 and gotten a refund.

Good luck,

Zac :(
