T400, problem with Wireless Network

2008-08-18, 17:54 PM

Hi,

Sometimes my wireless connection stops to work.

The yellow triangle on the wireless network symbol is visible to indicate that something is wrong. However trying to double click this icon in the system tray does not pop-up the usual Wireless Netwrok information box. I tried FN+F5 to open Access Connections, but no result. Tried to open the Access Connection through the ThinkVantage Productivy Center, but that doesn't work as well. Seems that I cannot access any of the programs that you would normally use to diagnose a wireless network error.

So far my only sollution to this problem is to reboot the system. After the reboot the wireless network will work in most of the cases, sometimes for several hours without any problems, other times it crashes after just a few minutes (with the above fault description). Have tried different wireless routers, but the problem remains.

Using Windows Vista Business as it comes when you do a system recovery. All drivers installed except driver for ATI Radeon 3400 (which I haven't been able to find yet).

My believes are that it might be a conflict between ThinkVantages management of wireless networks and the built in management in Windows Vista. Anyway of disabling Windows Vistas management completely?

Cheers,

Mike

Hi,

I am quite sure there is a problem with the software from ThinkVanatage that manages the wireless network card. Sometimes when I boot up the wireless network card will be switched of by software, I don't have any possibility of overriding this and need to reboot again... hopefully with the software switched on, but it's more like 50% chance.

Is there a possible way of turning of ThinkVantage's crappy Wireless Network card  management?

Brand new laptop and so many problems... really frustrating.

Cheers,

Mike

Re: T400, problem with Wireless Network

Hi there,

I'm having the same issue with my Lenovo T400 which I recieved a week ago. It has 5300 WiFi card. The wireless connection just stops working unexpectedly and the only way to make it work again is reboot. Really annoying. Switching off/on the wireless adaptor doesn't help.

Has anybody found a reasonable solution to this?

Hey guys, dumb thought, have you updated to the latest drivers?  My system didn't work well until everything was updated... that also included SP3, mind you I am running XPP - I dare not to run vista business until one of my other colleagues has it running smooth on his T61.  I believe the latest update is 09/14/08.

Hmm, my issues with the T400 wireless functionality are slightly different.  My system is about a 1.5 week old.

I had the hardest time trying to figure out how to connect, using ThinkVantage Access Connection.  I had to disable that and use windows to connect.  However, the connection drops from 54Mbps to 48 to 7 to 5 to 1.0Mbps inconsistantly.  The bars are green at the fullest.  I still can't figure it out.  It shouldn't flextuate like that.

I like the GUI for the TVAC.  It is pretty cool for management when it works.  I fluked out getting the TVAC to work on non-secure networks at starbucks or hotels but I can not get it to work in WPA at home.  I have a linksys WRT54G router running WPA.  It works with my other laptop, all my other video game machines and my neighbours computer.

And to boot, the Lenovo.Live.Com doesn't connect or times out.  Has anyone gotten this to connect to a live tech support guy or even a website?

Hi guys,

My solution to the problem was to download the latest drivers from the Intel website.

I have also stopped using ThinkVantages wireless configuration wizard, it just seems to make thins worse. Maybe there is a new stable release out there, please let me know, cause I have lost my faith in Lenovo products.

Re: T400, problem with Wireless Network

My girlfriend just got the t400. Wireless connected with Intel 5300 but with the yellow exclamation, limited connectivity. Nothing worked. Reset the WPA code for our router, and it worked once. Then she rebooted and it failed again. So, after scouring some message boards, I changed the Wireless Mode (http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-025787.htm) for the wireless card from Default settings (which were 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g) to ONLY 802.11b and 802.11g. Works fine now. Obviously, this thing won't hook up at any "a" signals, but ok with me now.

Haven't tried updating drivers, but maybe this would do it also. pos

hmm, actually, it's still very unpredictable. changing the settings seems to let it work for a short amount of time...haha. let's see what drivers do...

Shrek,

I have been looking at purchasing a T400 computer; however, I've read a few of the problems you have had in this discussion board (i.e. Wireless, Graphics Card, etc.). Have these all been resolved through the system restore & updated Intel driver? I'm also curious if you have had any new or remaining problems. The T400 looks like it has everything I need in a laptop computer; however, I'm a little reticent, having read about some of your issues which appear to be shared by many others. As you pointed out, the Lenovo return policy seems rather limiting. I'm just trying to avoid "buyer's remorse".

Best regards,

Gentnk
