Re: T400s No Sound

Mark_Lenovo,

so how do you explain this?

After my speakers stopped working for 2 days and the BIOS update didn't help anymore (as you said)... they finally and suddenly are working again!?!  :smileyvery-happy:

I have no idea why and what happened in the meantime.

Sooo... shall I wait now until I contact the service? I mean.. there's nothing I could "show" them - cause everything seems to work again.

rlweiner,

that sounds very interesting!

As I just posted, I had the same problem as everybody else. No speakers, but headphones...

Suddenly the speakers started working again and now as I read your report I remember that I had connected my notebook to my stereo equipment to be able to listen to music. After I unplugged it, mysteriously the notebook speakers worked again.

But does that mean that I have to get my notebook checked for motherboard problems?

Guinness,

Well, the hard failure is a blown speaker, which we were discussing the issue and how to prevent situations that can cause it by applying BIOS 1.12.   There can be plenty of reason why audio can stop working due to software as you know...

Glad it is working properly now!

Monade,

Could you share more details of the German forum member's T410 speaker troubles?   I don't think it is related, but some more details could help.?

Ok now explain tis then.

I have another blown speaker on another T400s while my original T400s (2808 machine type) is in for repairs.

Updated to  1.12 first thing. Went for 2 days ok .Volume never above 70 % total. Never touched the mute.

Now neither speaker works in Windows7 nor in Kubuntu, but it does using the headphones port.

I can smell ozone from the laptop.

We've got over 20 of these for swapout in our company and now we have 2 with  blown speakers and I'm one of the IT people testing them and the only one at the comapny using them. thats 10% failure rate with just 1 person. Guess what happens when we start getting these out to normal users?

Any one else put the BIOS 1.12 and have their speakers still blown?

He reported that the right speaker area was molten after the ThinkPad was closed and off over night. Also the display has visible changes. The DVD drive is not damaged.

Sounds very similar to the problem you described, that the speakers are burned after a shutdown.

Re: T400s No Sound

Hi All:

My T400s with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit was working fine with sound until I applied the newest firmware version 1.12-1.02 which has caused no sound! As a result, I can only hear sound when I only connect to the audio headphone port. If not, no sounds come out of the speaker. I also tried to go back to the previous 1.11 bios version but it did not help. It looks like firmware 1.12-1.02 killed my T400s sound. I have the 2801-CTO T400s.

Does anyone recommend any other steps to get the sound back before sending back to Lenovo or contacting Lenovo? Should I apply an older BIOS update as I already tried and it was not successful?

WARNING: If you sound works, do not apply firmware 1.12-1.02!

TIA

When my second laptop melted. it was working the night before just fine, I left it powered off and plugged into wall power to charge. I don't remember the circumstances of my first meltdown.

Re: T400s No Sound

Just wanted to report back:  finally, I sent my T400s into repair (under warranty of course), and it came back after 4 weeks with fully working speakers.

The repair center didn't tell me what the fault was (whether they only changed the speakers or whether they had to change the whole board I don't know).

But the solution simply is to send it back to Lenovo, and they will fix it.

I decided to punt and return for credit given the repeated emails saying repairs were delayed for "PARTS HOLD" and having my "new" laptop in repair for two of the three weeks I have owned it.  Customer service that handled the return was very responsive.  It's good not to be hastled for an obvious problem.

My inclination is to reorder a T400 instead, once I receive credit for the T400s.
