Re: T400s No Sound

So, this is hardware problem. This is not a BIOS problem and it does not depend on the OS. Apparently, the manufacturer has purchased the defective speakers or a mistake in the manufacture of the motherboard.

It's a shame that Lenovo is silent about this a common problem! :smileymad:

I had the same problem. Earphones work fine. I don't know how to contack service center in the US. I'm not even in the US now. Should I send my laptop to the US service center? Sigh...

This seems to be a rather "common" issue with the t400s.

Mine stopped working too after 2 weeks of owning it. The guy who repaired (aka exchanged) them said that there was absolutely no visible dammage from outside and coudl't explain why they stopped working.

Would be nice to have some official word on this from lenovo :)

I have had my T400s for months now (running both Windows 7 and Ubuntu) and although it is suffering the dreaded random shutdowns (as discussed here http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T400s-random-shutdowns/td-p/144056), sound has been perfect...until yesterday!

It didn't notice it happen while sound was playing, but as I shutdown Windows, I noticed the shutdown sound was only coming from the right speaker, nothing from the left. After doing a few checks in Windows, I rebooted into Ubuntu and discovered the was still no sound from the left speaker.

I then did some digging and came across this thread. When I read about others reporting the cause to be a melted speaker membrane, I found this very hard to believe and had to inspect for myself.

I could not believe my eyes when I found this:

The voicecoil is cooked! How the hell did this happen?? It's like the sound amp decided to feed DC straight into the speaker!? Good thing I already have a replacement T400s on the way (been waiting over month now), but my greatest fear is it will have the same faults as this one...

I don't have that "yet". But i can feel the left speaker is warm, and the right one isn't. Also the fan is on the left side. The left side of the laptop gets warmer than the right side.  Also at the bottom. Hope i don't get the same problems but most likely i will in a couple of months :-(

DAAUMMMMM!
Thats a horrific site. From this angle, the cables coming out of the speaker housing look like theyre squished together and seem bare at the connection points. That might be the problem....have positive and negative cables touching and you got a bad situation.

I know! Very horrific! :smileysad:

Before I found the speaker, I was initially thinking possibly pinched wires, but I carefully inspected all the wiring and there was no sign of any problems. I think it might just be the angle/photo that might make it look like what you're seeing samtoossi. Have look at this shot (hi res): http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/3131/19122009375.jpg

If the wires did somehow short together, this still actually wouldn't happen. Since the speaker is passive, shorting the terminals does nothing to the speaker; the amp on the other hand would not like this.

I'm thinking two possibilities: 1) heat from the CPU/Heatsink is melting the speaker housing (as houtsma suggested), OR, the sound amp/chipset is feeding DC to the speaker, causing the voicecoil to heat up, melt the housing and eventually go open circuit.

I rarely listen to music/watch movies on my T400s, and almost never have it at full volume. However, that is not the point (and not the case in this instance). Even if I ran it all day playing music at full volume, it should never result in this, unless of course the T400s has a major design flaw (not ruling that out either!).

Wow....again....wow! I'm surprised you didn't smell the speakers burning when it happened! Lets see the forum can crack this problem before Lenovo does....AGAIN! ;) Fortunately, my speakers are still banging, but like houtsma pointed out, it could happen to me sooner or later. Keeping my fingers crossed for all of us.

Good luck with the new system, hopefully its not going to take a s***t like this one did.

How did you make that picture? Did you dismount your laptop? Lost your warranty that way? I am curious how my speaker looks like at this moment while it's still working (wondering if it's maybe already half away?).. ;-)
