houtsma, ubersteve,

You beat me to it!

Here's the deal - the BIOS will prevent this, and I would encourage people to download this.   New production 1/10/10 should not experience any of these speaker issues.   It is a possibility for some earlier units without the bios.

As I understand it, there are some conditions, often tied to a power off event while audio was playing, where voltage is continued to be supplied to the speaker.  If the system is rebooted, it resets, but if it were left off, the speaker could be damaged after some interval as was with Ubersteve's.

If your speakers aren't working, I would recommend service after the usual sanity check of trying with headphones to make sure it's not just drivers, etc.   If everything is fine now, apply this BIOS to guard against future issues.

Mark

So here we go...

Same problems with my T400s :(

Speakers worked until yesterday. Now only with headphones.

I just updated the BIOS with the shown version.

Nothing. :-(

Does that mean that mine are already melted/damaged?

Do I first have to send my laptop back and THEN try the update again BEFORE anything isn't working anymore??

Guinness,

Sorry you were affected by this!

The BIOS update unfortunately won't fix speaker problems (if they are already blown), but it will prevent this type of failure from occurring in the future which is why I would encourage everyone with a T400s to update now.   If your speakers have already been damaged, then you will need to contact service.

Service will need to replace the speakers, and if you were experiencing the shutdowns, replace your system board while they are at it.

Mark

Dear Mark,

in a German thinkpad forum a user of the new T410 is reporting the same problem with the speaker: they were blown only a few days after ordering. Could this problem be related to the T400s speaker problems and/or is there a bios update necessary also for the T410?

Thx, monade

I had the same probem on my brand new T400S (2801-CTO).  The Lenovo system diagnostics and Device Manager said everything was functioning normally, but I had no sound through the speakers -- only through the headphone jack.  I tried all of the troubleshooting tips, and finally took it in for service (fortunately, there's a service depot near my house).  Replacing the speakers didn't have any effect, so they replaced the motherboard.  That did it.  Their theory is that the headphone jack turns off the speakers when in use, and that the jack was "stuck" in this position.  Very frustrating, but at least it's working now.

Lenovo retrieved my T400s and now it's in Houston at their repair senter.  I just received notice that the repair is on "Parts Hold."  I think they may be running short of parts because of the speaker and shutdown problems!  Hope they will get this solved soon.

Regarding headphone jack stuck "theory"... You can set conexant card to play two independent streams. In that case headphone output has nothing to do with speaker output and you still can't hear sound... Yesterday I had my first sudden shutdown :(... I am very disappointed because I was sure that lenovo is different...
