T400s battery

2009-11-06, 18:28 PM

I wonder if anyone has suggestions on how best to use the battery on a new T400s.  I will mostly be near a power plug so I wonder if I should only connect it to the power when I run out of battery or always leave it plugged in.  The goal is to prolong the battery life.

Most of the things I've read on preserving the longevity of  lithium ion batteries say that they should be stored at around 40% of full charge (storing them at 100% charged, as well as completely depleting them, isn't optimal).

Using the Lenovo power management utilities you can customize the 'start charging' and 'stop charging' thresholds.  If you're primarily using the machine on AC power, and if  'topping off' the battery at max 40% charge leaves you with enough operating time when you're occasionally away from an outlet, that seems to be the best way to preserve the battery so it will be able to retain its maximum capacity if and when you need to charge it to 100%.

Being able to customize the charge thresholds like that is a great feature.  Lenovo is one of the few manufacturers that really does add value with its customized utilities.
