Re: T400s random shutdowns

2009-11-18, 16:22 PM

Monday & Tuesday I received small electric shocks everytime I logged in using the fingerprint reader -- total of over 20 shocks. Has anyone who's T400s is randoming shutdowning experienced this problem?

I'm wondering if the shocks I experienced are indicative of an electrical grounding problem with the T400s. If so, this electrical grounding issue is most probably related to the shutdown problem.

My $0.02,

This problem is totally unacceptable, especially on high-end expensive machines such as these. I praised all my previous IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads for their reliability. But this random shutdown, which happened three times today can't continue! I posted my information on the spreadsheet.

I've been to the local depot once when I had Vista 64 loaded and they couldn't duplicate the problem of course. Now with Win 7 it continues. I have to have a reliable system and it looks like it won't be Lenovo unless they can fix this, and SOON!

Given the widespread nature of the problem, I can't believe that no solution has been found. I know I'm not the only one frustrated with this. The number of people with the problem who aren't posting to this site are likely a large multiple of those who are posting here. This is going to be a PR disaster for Lenovo.

I am a fan of Lenovo, so feel so sorry about the shutdown problems you have encountered.

It seems that I am one of the few people in this thread who has a T400s with no such problem. Hopefully, I can help you narrow down the parts that have caused the problem.

In short, my T400s runs Win 7, 32-bit, Retail Final version and Lenovo Power Management. I did a clean install of Win 7. I had two motherboards, one coming originally and the other was put in after the laptop was repaired for CPU noise. No shutdowns on either motherboard ever.

My main battery is quite new. So, your battery can be the problem cause. Mine is a panasonic with date 2009-10-14, SN 257, FRU 42T4690, design capacity 43.29W.

Lenovo has had faulty battery circuits/software combinations for other models. If the shutdown problem is truly with a specific batch of batteries, because of the problem's random nature, it will take time for Lenovo to find enough faulty batteries to reproduce random shutdowns and find out the faulty batch.

After all, I am not really sure if the battery has caused the problem. But, there are people in this thread who have refreshed win 7, lenovo PM, and motherboard but still get shutdowns. Battery is what I think likely to be the cause.

Wesleyyin,

Thanks for your advice. I don't think it's going to solve my problem though. My laptop is also new as of August and the battery is barely used. In fact, most of the time that I get the shutdowns, I'm plugged in via the new docking station with a 90W power supply. I had the problem with the original Vista 64 load and now it continues with Windows 7.

I spent an hour on the phone with Lenovo customer support today. They had me change some software settings regarding when and how my computer goes to sleep/hibernate in the various battery and plugged-in configurations and power plans. In general, they wanted me to have no sleep/hibernation. I told the cust. service agent I was highly skeptical that changing some software settings would solve this problem, but I'm giving it a try.  I'll update this board if I get any continued random shutdowns or if it does stop based on the recommendations.

BTW, my battery is Panasonic  42T4690, serial number 232 with manufacture date of July 23, 2009.

We know it's not a sleep/hibernate issue because the machine completely powers off to the point that nothing gets written to the event logs.

The only thing is if it was the battery, that it must be causing some type of short to just make the unit power off like that, i usually see my power offs when it's on the dock.

Like others, i've had the motherboard replaced and mine is still doing it, with a clean install of Windows 7 32bit etc...

I might see if i can get the battery exchanged and see if that helps.

I might be wrong, but there is a possibility of faulty battery circuit triggering some kind of protection and causing the shutdown even when the laptop is on AC power. AC adapters with weak surge protection may also cause shutdown due to power glitches. However, I noticed that people see random shutdowns both on AC and on battery, so the problem is more likely the battery circuit.

It is awkward to run T400s without the main battery, but if you can try AC power with no battery attached, you will be able to confirm/eliminate the battery reason.

Re: T400s random shutdowns

Hello,

I have the exact same symptoms on my T400 (not T400s). I am running Windows 7 64-bit, with power manager 3.05 and BIOS 3.09/3.10. The problems started after installing Windows 7.

Strangely, I am unable to switch on my machine after it randomly shuts down, until I take out and re-insert the battery pack. This happens each time. However, it is not an issue with the battery, because the same problem occurs on a battery I know to be working (it works on a friend's T400 which does not have this problem).

Has this problem been fixed for the T400? Please advise. Thank you!

Could anyone confirm the shutdown bug with Intel 5100 AGN wireless card? I hesitate to buy a T400s because of this issue!

I cannot confirm any bug with 5100 AGN, but mine runs 5300 and has no shutdown issue.
