Re: Brand new Lenovo ThinkPad T400s (NSDCVMN / 2808CVG) suddenly shutting down?

Will do.. But I suspect it wont make much of a difference, it's obvious that there is some sort of either a BIOS bug or simply a hardware failure somewhere.

Hopefully it will be fixed with a simple BIOS update.. If not, yeah you know..

if it is indeed a hardware malfunction or bios firmware problem, at least you know you have tried every options at your disposal to solve the problem. Give it a try, if that don't work out (most likely it won't) then you should call lenovo for repair or replacement if that is what is needed.

Ramguy459, gklerner, foolhaha,

Interesting - with 3 customers reporting similar symptoms here, this is worth looking into.   From the thread, there are pieces of information - OS known for some, system Model type and config for others.

It would be helpful to look for common factors.   If the three of you return to this thread, could you each clarify:

System MT/Model - the 7 digit type

OS version / service pack

Confirm BIOS level

Memory config

Could you also share a few more details about what is going on when this shut down occurs - are you connected to a network (wired or wireless)?  On battery or AC or occurs on both?   Totally random timing as to when this occurs?   What applications are running?

Calling support isn't a bad idea, but it would be helpful if you could share a bit more here as well...

Thanks!

Mark

System MT/Model - the 7 digit type: NSDCVMN / 2808CVG

OS version / service pack: Windows7 RTM Professional Service Pack 0 x64 (Build 7600.16385.090713-1255) and Windows Vista Business Service Pack 2 x64 (Build 6002.18005.090410-1830)

Confirm BIOS level:  1.02-1.01(latest official release as of today, tried with re-flash)

Memory config: Kingston DDR3 HyperX SO-DIMM 1066MHz 2x 2GiB (KHX8500S3ULK2/4G)

More details:

It seems to be completely random. Sometimes I'm just sitting on Live Messenger, other times just surfing the web, other times I'm not using it at all, it's just laying by itself while I'm at work. It happens about 3-4 times each day, no matter if the AC is plugged in or not, has happened with low and full battery etc..

I even tried to force it to happen by completely smashing my T400s with Prime95 and Furmark running at once, also tried Intel Burn Test but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with the load on the computer, it's simply random?

Mine is 2801-CTO

BIOS 1.02-1.01

I have 4G (2x2G) RAM, 5300 Wifi, running Windows Vista 64Bit with SP1. I'm sure I had AC plugged in when the machine suddenly shutdown (it was actually not shutdown, it seemed lost power instaneously).

Re: Brand new Lenovo ThinkPad T400s (NSDCVMN / 2808CVG) suddenly shutting down?

Mark, I started seeing this problem for the first time yesterday (7/29/09) and now today. My T400 was purchased

in the April '09 timeframe.  Here are my particulars:

System MT/Model - the 7 digit type:  7417 - CTO

OS version / service pack              :  XP   SP 3

Confirm BIOS level                         :  4.0.1.3.1038

Memory config                                :  1.94 GB

When I came to the computer first thing yesterday morning (I leave it on overnight), it was off. I started it up

and it shut off, as described by others, in maybe 30 minutes.  I unplugged all attached devices:  2nd monitor

and USB hub.   Happened again in 90 minutes. Tried on battery power (nothing was connected to the computer) and

it worked for 2 - 2.5 hours.  So I switched to a second Lenovo AC power adapter and it ran until about 10am this

morning.  That's when I started searching for answers.......

Just stopped again in the middle of typing this post!! (fortunately, I had saved this text in a file...).  And

it was on battery power this time.

I have noticed now that a second or two before the shutdown, that the focus is stolen.  Twice I've been typing

actively and I noticed that what I'm doing isn't showing up on screen.  I saw that my current window did not

have the focus (didn't notice what did).  As I went to click on my window again to re-claim the focus, that's

when the lights went out.

Help!

Does the problem occur with or without the battery installed? Does it happen the other way around [If battery was attached, remove it. If battery was not attached, install it]?

\\ I do not respond to PM regarding individual tech support. Keep discussions in the forum for the benefit of others //

Just pulled the battery out, ortegaluis.  We'll see....

After my last post a couple of hours ago, opened the Lenovo Toolbox;  looked for errors and ran some tests.  The only thing there was two days before the first shutdown.  It must have been associated with a blue screen crash.  It happened when I was reconnecting cables after working remotely.  Haven't seen it before or since.  Here's the info (transcribed...  couldn't copy/paste):

Operating System Crash  Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 bf8208e1, parameter3 b8831c04, parameter4 00000000.  7/27/09  9:17:13 PM

Operating System Crash   The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x1000008e (0xc0000005, 0xbf8208e1, 0xb8831c04, 0x00000000).  A dump was saved in C:\....
