Re: T400s random shutdowns

Thats a long stretch! I think you might be in the clear

Knock on wood ;)

I guess I'll do a BIOS update the next time I get a shutdown. In the mean time,  I downgraded my video drivers to version 1892, like wesleyyin, who doesn't seem to have the shutdown problem. We'll see how that goes.

I haven't had random shut down after BIOS upograde as well. but i have virtualisation switched off in the BIOS, so i do not know, what has helped, if new BIOS, or virtualisation off in BIOS :-) Anyway random shutdowns are gone (hope will be like that for the rest of my T400s life :-))

Sweeet!

how long has it been since your last random shutdown? And you upgraded to version 1.11, correct?

I can also confirm i haven't had a single shutdown issue any more since a week. It's not related due to virtualization, since that has always been off in mij BIOS settings and still had shutdowns (about twice a week).

Now i have changed 2 things (at the same time i'm afraid):

  1. I installed the newest BIOS 1.11 as soon as it came out.
  2. I downgraded the video driver from 8.15.10.1968 to 8.15.10.1855

Since that moment my system is rock stable for over a week now.No video glitches and no shutdowns!

So now we only have to be aware of any new video driver or BIOS coming out in the future for these problems not to re-occur!

Re: T400s random shutdowns

So - I was finally about happy (although I still didn't entirely trust) my T400s. Had no shutdowns for about 1-2 weeks. I had disabled nearly everything in the BIOS and uninstalled all Lenovo tools.

Then today it shut down... but neatly unlike the spontaneous ones earlier. When starting it again it would only show "Fan error" - so now I can't use it at all!

I was even more surprised when I called Lenovo Support and they said I'd have to be without my computer for nearly two weeks for them to change the fan. I mentioned this thread to him, but he said "I don't think it has anything to do with that - we havent heard of it - so it's most likely related to your fan". Sigh!

And i think he is right.... This sounds like a completely different issue than discussed in this thread. These kind of things always s*ck. Two weeks ago i had an issue with my 1 month old Nokia E52 phone. You would expect excellent service with an expensive E-series business phone from a company that needs to keep it's name high. But no, i had to do without my phone for two weeks during repair!!

Re: T400s random shutdowns

Perhaps - perhaps not. I don't believe the fan issue that happened today has anything to do with the 20 shutdowns I've had since I got my T400s. All previous shutdowns has been the same as explained in this thread - spontaneous, without any warning.

My frustration is that the Lenovo supporter DID see this as related to the fan-issue of today - and thereby did not want to look into the random shutdowns since replacing the fan would solve everything.

Re: T400s random shutdowns

Here is my two cents

I know a great deal of people are having these shutdown problems. But they might not all be related to the same issue. For example, a lot of us have had these shutdowns with Windows 7 only, but a minority of us have had random shutdowns with Vista or XP. This could mean that the shutdowns are not software related, but it could perhaps be that the people reporting the shutdowns under Vista/XP have a different set of problems than the Windows 7 people. So we can't just outright through out the possibility that there is a software/BIOS problem under Windows 7.

Its very hard to narrow these things down to "fix all" solution. Like you said, it could be that your particular problem is due to overheating/fan issue, but it might not be. But replacing a dead fan is good start, and it might fix your particual problem with the random shutdowns.

Hope you get your fan soon!

Re: T400s random shutdowns

2009-12-08, 20:09 PM

HI,

For what it's worth - I am also experiencing random shutdowns. I will now update the BIOS and downgrade the video driver (as per instructions in this forum) and I'll report back if the issue is resolved.

Quick specs:

Thinkpad T400s

2801-CTO

2.4Ghz c2d

2Gb DDR3

128Gb Samsung MLC SSD (Upgraded it myself from the toshiba 250 HDD)

Win 7 x86 - preinstalled version with all the lenovo experience gadgets and gizmos included in the box (fully updated through lenovo toolbox). Win7 likewise fully updated.

The shutdowns appear to be becoming more frequent - from about once every few days to about twice per day. The fan does not seem to be broken (I can hear it whirling)

I have experienced screen corruption once in toto. Restarted and it went away.

Like stated I will report back if the update and downgrade helped.

Cheers, David

Just want to keep the pressure up as my random shutdowns continue. I had one yesterday.  Today, I did update the BIOS from 1.09 to 1.11 but since the only change listed is to how an IP address is assigned by hardware, I doubt that it will have any effect.
