Re: T400s random shutdowns

2009-12-09, 20:39 PM

Hi,

I am experiencing same problem - sudden shut down that comes without any warning or sign - just like suddenly loosing the power.

I did upgrade BIOS from 1.06 to 1.11 and since than it has not happened. At this moment my laptop is running over 24 hours without the unexpected shutdown, while before the upgrade the shutdown occurred over night for sure. So the upgrade did help somehow, however not sure for how long. Will report back after week or so what is the result.

My specifications:

T400s

Intel Core 2 Duo P9400

4G ram

128 G samsung SSD

Vista fully upgraded

Just want to keep the pressure up as my random shutdowns continue. I had one yesterday.  Today, I did update the BIOS from 1.09 to 1.11 but since the only change listed is to how an IP address is assigned by hardware, I doubt that it will have any effect.

Although not listed in the release notes of the new BIOS i wouldn't be surprised if your shutdowns do stop after upgrading the BIOS to version 1.11. Btw, what video driver version did you have when you still had these shutdowns? If you had these shutdowns with the correct video driver (8.15.10.1855) and with BIOS 1.09 and it stops with BIOS 1.11 then only BIOS 1.11 is the cure. Until now it can still be both. Please report back if 1.11 solved your problems (also if not)....

Thanks,

I've refrained from applying the BIOS update to try to minimize introducing variables that, themselves, might introduce additional problems.

I do continue to have the random shutdowns and, in fact, their frequency has increased significantly in the last 3-4 days...though no BIOS, driver or software changes have applied.

In his most recent post, Mark_Lenovo (on 9/4) said engineering had observed the problem but has been unable to isolate it and come up w/ a solution.

Question:  If that's the case, why would we expect or suspect that the 1.11 BIOS update would resolve the problem, unless it was just a happy coincidence that the update included, without planning or intent, a fix.

With the former BIOS (1.09) I had Intel video driver 8.15.10.1749.  I will report back if the random shutdown stop for a week or so, and of course, if they continue.

So, the BIOS upgrade to 1.11 does not solve the problem. The unexpected shutdown occurred for me again. At least it is not every day, but once every 2 - 3 days. However it is awkward that such expensive laptop meant for business purposes behaves like this. Hope that lenovo comes up with some solution as changing computer parts does not help (as RamGuy459 reported here http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/T400s-random-shutdowns/td-p/144056/page/23). I would say it is time for lenovo to do something as this problem was reported in June and till now they are not able to deal with it.

Re: T400s random shutdowns

Hi guys,

I haven't had a shutdown for a week now with BIOS 1.11 and display drivers 1892. It sucks to hear that people are having bad luck with the BIOS 1.11 cus it might mean that I will be getting them too soon.  I know "houtsma" uses Intel drivers 1855 /BIOS 1.11 and has been free of shutdowns since late November. "Wesleyyin" is running display drivers 1892 like me has never had a shutdown. If your running Windows 7, try one of these display drivers (1855 or 1892) just for the hell of it and see if it helps.

Hope Lenovo comes up with some answers soon

-Sam

No shutdowns since 1.11 and video 1855 on Windows 7 x64.

Writing this from 35,000 on an Airtran flight to Florida.  Now that's cool!
