Hi guys,

I haven't had a shutdown for a week now with BIOS 1.11 and display drivers 1892. It sucks to hear that people are having bad luck with the BIOS 1.11 cus it might mean that I will be getting them too soon.  I know "houtsma" uses Intel drivers 1855 /BIOS 1.11 and has been free of shutdowns since late November. "Wesleyyin" is running display drivers 1892 like me has never had a shutdown. If your running Windows 7, try one of these display drivers (1855 or 1892) just for the hell of it and see if it helps.

Hope Lenovo comes up with some answers soon

Hello Sam. I have a friend telling me that the sudden shutdowns are likely due to overheating of some intel chips (e.g., the graphics chip). Do you know recall running any graphics intensive tasks such as 3D, webpages full of flash movies, etc right before your T400s shuts down?

The random shutdowns are continuing with BIOS 1.11 for me. I now have Intel display driver 8.15.10.1872 and it shutdown today while docked and unattended.

Hello jsperson3. I have a friend telling that sudden shutdowns are possibly due to overheating intel chips. This partially explains why some lenovo running specific versions of intel drivers never see any shutdown. Do you recall running any graphics intensive tasks such as 3D, loading webpages full of flash vidoes, high-res vidoe, fancy screen savers, etc?

wRe: T400s random shutdowns

I just wanted to check in and put out my situation.

I have a T400s, latest BIOS 1.11..  As well was using the latest video driver, Driver Revision: 15.16.1.64.1968.

OS is Windows 7 x64 OEM version. I purchased an OEM version so I could whack the system and start clean, and NOT install all the bloatware crap Lenovo pushes via the restore disks..

I have had my system do the random shutdown deal a couple times over the past week.. Seems to have happened while I was idle, away from the computer. I had open only IE (with www.orlandoforums.com, and www.facebook.com open) and Outlook 2007. It was a hard shutdown, as upon restarting Windows yells at me and asks if I want to boot in Safe Mode.

Upon checking here, I have now downgraded the video to Driver Revision: 15.15.3.64.1855. So, we shall see if the problem persists..

Now then, a couple things I noticed... A mere 2 weeks ago, when I downloaded all the latest drivers via Lenovo's support section, they listed the 1968 driver.. And I now see, that they have listed the 1855 driver.. I am guessing Lenovo officially recognizes the problem with the 1968 driver, and have done this so they distribute the driver that seems to fix the problem.. Okay, cool I guess... But I still don't see an official word in this thread that they were pulling the latest driver in lieu of the older one.. Maybe I missed it?

Other than that, upon previous bootups, when I had the 1968 driver.. I noticed this msg at the boot screens..

And now that I have the retro drivers, I do not get that message.. Related??? I dunno...

Anyway, that is where I am now... We shall see what happens, but it would be nice to see some sorta of response from Lenovo... Again, if I have missed it, I apologize...

Upon checking Intel's site for driver updates, I see there is a newer driver than the 15.16.1.64.1968 released on 10/14/2009. They list revision 15.16.2.64.1986 released on 11/7/2009.

I wonder if this new driver fixes the problem.. In checking the release notes, I see nothing noting that it fixes any random shutdown issue... But, hmm....

From what i recall from this thread is that also the intel driver version 15.16.2.64.1986 also gave problems. I am not sure if those problems were also related to the shutdown thing but certainly to the video glitches, which is another hot thread on this forum. I would't try that version if u were you. Stick to the version 1855 version and see what happens.

Thanks for the info!!

I think I will be sticking with the 1855, unless I find the problem still exists.. So far so good... Only difference as far as I am concerned is that 1855 uses the legacy look UI as oppossed to 19xx using the fancy whiz bang sticky UI... Being I rarely hit up the props there anyway, it matters not..

Anyway, thanks again for the info.. Hope this proves to fix it..

I doubt they are related. What your seeing on the screen is for Intel's AMT, not the Intel graphics chip. You probably installed new AMT drivers or updated its settings. I disabled the AMT features from BIOS. You might wanna do the  same thing if you don't use it.

Re: T400s random shutdowns

Hi All,

It's been a while since i've posted, but I have been trying to keep up with what others have posted. (Been very busy with work lately).

I have good news and bad news. The good news is I haven't had a shutdown in over 3 weeks (I was previously getting shutdowns ~1/week). The bad news is, I don't know why! :(

I updated the BIOS to v1.11 ~2 weeks ago and I was playing with my Intel video driver ~1 week ago currently v8.15.10.1855). I have also set the Adaptive Thermal Management setting in the BIOS to Balanced for both AC and Battery.

One thing I want to clear up: The original reason the Intel video driver was brought up in this thread (and I was O/T at the time) was due to screen corruption I started getting (see here ) and not related to the shutdowns. However, it seems some of you have had success with your shutdowns by changing  upgrading/downgrading the Intel video drivers. Maybe we've stumbled across something, or maybe it's coincidence....who knows, only time will tell!

In other matters, my work colleague's T400s started with the random shutdowns about a month ago (we have 3 T400s' in our office, 2 with the shutdown problem, 1 without). He gets the shakes, I mean shutdowns, 2-3 times per week, and still gets them since upgrading the BIOS to v1.11. Tomorrow i'm going to find out what version Intel video driver he's running, and get him to change it to 1855.

Will keep you guys posted.

Cheers,

Steve

PS. Lenovo Care continue to promise a replacement T400s, but still can't tell me when!! This has been going on for 6 weeks now... ;-(

PPS. I've just added a new column to the spreadsheet for the Intel Video Driver version.

Steve, would you like me to add my info/details to your spreadsheet?
