Re: T400s random shutdowns (SOLVED)

2010-01-07, 16:49 PM

Nope, not solved... I do not have the camera, opted to not have one as no one wants to see my ugly mug... So, no camera here, yet I still had the problem... Besides, the system was not going to sleep, it was shutting down hard.

Have not however had an issue in weeks since rolling back to 1855 driver.

Re: T400s random shutdowns (NOT SOLVED)

2010-01-07, 16:49 PM

With respect to what I am experiencing, I share houtsma's doubts about the role of the camera card.

The nature of my shutdowns is of an abrupt and instantaneous power-off; no warning, nothing depicted on the screen, no HDD run, etc.  Instantaneous. It does not go into sleep or hibernate mode.  It's a total power down, instantly.

Which is why I've been very skeptical about possible diagnoses involving video drivers, etc.

Also, the shutdowns have sometimes occured, as in houtsma's case, when the machine was totally unattended and/or untouched.

BTW, for several weeks now I have been having very erratic and unreliable functioning of the fingerprint reader as well as erratic and unpredictable behavior of the WiFi system.

Other than that, I'm delighted with the machine.

What broader issue are we speaking of?  Can you describe the symptom that you believe the forum is dealing with?   I ask because when the T400s sleeps there are no lights on the user facing side.  There is a moon light on the away side.  Are are absolutely sure we are dealing with complete shutdown, or apparent shutdown?

Re: T400s random shutdowns (NOT SOLVED)

The problem most commonly reported in this thread is a complete and sudden shutdown and/or loss of power. It's not a kernel crash / sleep / cpu halt, etc. The same result could be achieved by running the system on battery, then pull the battery out.

If it were a sleep initiated by the camera board (or any other event), it would be in the system log. As it stands with the random shutdowns most here are suffering, no events are logged.

HTH clear things up.

Cheers,

Steve

PS. When my T400s sleeps, the power button lights pulsates.

Dear,

Very glad to find this thread. I'm not alone. My T400s also has same problem.

In my case, the shut down would be 3~4 at month.

At first, I guess the OS problem, but maybe not.

Now, I'm guessing the  powermanagement part  of hardware or firmware.

My specs:

2801 CTO, P9400 2.4 G, RAM 3G, fingerprint, No webcam, No bluetooth, Wifi 5100

Windows 7 64bit

Lenovo should do something for us quickly.

Please, let me know, if have a good news.

Have a nice day.

Best regards

Benjamin

Hello

I have the same issues with the random shutdown, the latest was now 10 min ago.

i run with the 1855 driver to most likly doesnt have anything to do with the videocard driver, eventho the shutdown is not occuring every day, more like every 2 weeks.

Anyway, when the computer is not running on AC, I didnt have any random shutdowns at all.

Just wondering how many people experiencing these problems use a second hard drive in their ultrabay? Don't remember my laptop shutting down when I had the dvd drive installed, but it's been a long time since I used that.

All the best,

Brendan

I have the DVD drive installed, probably like most, and still experience the random shutdowns. Haven't had a shutdown in two days though. I'm looking forward to hearing from Mark or others at Lenovo regarding a possible solution this week.  Mark?

Same problem here. 5 month old T400s, typically experience 1-2 random shutdowns per month. The usual 'Unexpected Shutdown' message appears on restart.

Type: 2815-2CB

Windows Vista x32 SP2 Business

Intel P9400 Core 2 Duo

4GB RAM

Dont use a docking bay or anything other non-standard config.

Figure it has to be BIOS or power manager related, as its just like the plug is pulled out (despite being on AC power with a full battery).

thx

Steve
