After almost three weeks without a shutdown today I experienced two. It occurred just after latest win 7 security update KB972270. Not sure if it has anything to do with it, but there has not  been any change. I will reinstall it and will report back if any change.

T400s

Win 7 32bit, proffesional

Core 2Duo P9400

4G ram

128G SSD

Bios 1.12

video driver 1855

My T400s never had any shutdown before, but today it had one exactly after the same update!

The last events in the system log are in the time order:

1. ID 7036: Windows Error Report Service service entered the stopped state

2. multiple events of ID 18: Installation Ready ...: KB890830, KB977839, KB890830

3. ID 7040: The start type of the Windows Modules Installer service was changed from demand start to auto start.

4. ID 7040: The start type of the Windows Modules Installer service was changed from auto start to demand start.

5. ID 7036: The Windows Modules Installer service entered the stopped state.

There is also a Setup Event:

ID 3: Package KB972270 failed to be changed to the Staged state. Status: 0x800f0816.

Sorry that the dreaded random shutdown finally hit you too. This is a very pervasive problem it seems.

Re: T400s random shutdowns

on the +ve side..... I see that we are not alone with the T400s random hard halt issue.....

on the -ve side...... LENOVO - please listen carefully - you better get it fixed right now cause I'm the Purchasing SVP of a major corporate account of Lenovo with a PO for up to 6,000 T400's on my desk that you want me to authorize by Jan 31.

We have been quietly using, evaluating and testing these machines and on the whole they are exactly what we want - however there has been several reports back to me that he T400s randomly stops working - best described as an instantaneous hard halt (like running on battery power and then pulling the battery pack off the back = instant hard halt).

On checking out here in the www..... I see from this thread that not only is it a previously documented problem but that LENOVO don't seem to be feeling any urgency to fix it.

Lenovo - please understand...... 6,000 T400s x approx $1,100 each = $6.6mn

I await your response and FIX to the problem..... BEFORE confirming the PO.

And in case you think any sort of fix is going to be quietly slipped only to my organization.... I want the FIX published here on this message board so that all my fellow members of the T400s user community get to benefit and to publicly confirm that they are now happy with the T400s and the hard halt issue is resolved.

Over to you Lenovo - 16 days and counting until the 31st...... or Dell gets the deal.....

You can contact me through this board...... as your neglect to take this issue seriously has now made it a very public debate.

Hi c4s_tf_porker, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

Just a reminder that this is a users helping users community, moderated by volunteers like me. Although employees do fly by from time to time, it is not a monitored Lenovo support channel...

...your best approach is to talk to the Lenovo contact on the PO.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

So as I wrote in my previous post, I uninstalled the win 7 update KB972270, however I experienced the shutdown again. Anyways, before the update there has been nearly two weeks without the shutdown.

All,

In my last post on the matter, I indicated that we have made some progress and we have.  I had hoped that we would have completed verifcation and be ready to communicate an update this week.  We are close.   I would just ask for a bit more patience from this group - I understand the randomness and nature of this symptom has made it difficult to live with.

c4s_tf_porker,

Thanks for the heads up on your deal, and I appreciate your candor.  We do take this situation seriously and are working dillegently to provide a resolution for all customers whether purchasers of quantity one or thousands.

I would encourage you to work through your account representative - they should be able to facilitate direct discussions with appropriate Lenovo sales and product management  to help you make an informed purchase decision concerning this issue ahead of your deadline.

Best regards,

Mark

Thanks Mark. Looking forward to a resolution on this problem for all of us.

+1

Even though I have been shutdown free since 1855, I am still curious as to what the official word is, as 1855 seems not to have fixed everyone's issue..

I am hoping it is a software issue rather than hardware though!!
