Re: Brand new Lenovo ThinkPad T400s (NSDCVMN / 2808CVG) suddenly shutting down?

2009-08-04, 14:40 PM

I had this happen once on my T400s (2801CTO) as well.  I guess it's time to try the BIOS update.

I noticed in reading through Microsoft's description of KB937500 (which the BIOS update release notes say must be applied for Vista machines prior to updating the BIOS) that the fix for the issue solved by KB937500 is incorporated in Vista SP1.  Kind of odd the BIOS release notes didn't mention that Vista SP1 doesn't need the Vista hotfix (assuming that all T400s machines have shipped with SP1).

After the BIOS update I haven't had a single power loss yet!

So I'm optimistic, seems like it might have gotten solved with that update :)

That's really hopeful news RamGuy459!  Can you please tell the particulars of where to get the new release and how to install it??  Thanks a million.

Download, burn, boot and update.. Piece of cake!

This is for the T400s 2808, I have no idea if there are other BIOS releases for the different T400s models?

Unfortunately I was again struck by the power loss issue today, it took a bit longer than usual but it occurred again, so obviously it's not fixed by the new BIOS release :(

TexasTea400,

The T400 is a different machine entirely than the T400s, so please be sure you are navigating the support site based on your 4 digit model type on the bottom like 2081, etc, to ensure you are getting the right files.

RamGuy459,

I don't believe that we have addressed this issue through a BIOS update because we are still trying to understand the reason for these random shut downs.   I realize this is frustrating, and really appreciate the feedback that you are sharing here.  At the moment, this does not seem to be a widespread issue, although there are several members here reporting what seem to be similar symptoms.

Is there a volunteer in the US with a T400s experiencing these random shut downs that would let us take a look at their system?

If so, please send me a private message

Best regards,

Mark

Mark, I certainly appreciate your interest.  I am getting shut-downs several times each day.  So, you could get failure very often to support testing.  I have a T400 7417-CTO and I'd be _more_ than glad to help.  It's bordering on unusable....

Anyway, here is some further data that may help with your debugging:

 - In Windows' Power Options Properties (from Control Panel) | Advanced tab:
I changed the setting for this item: "When I press the power button on my computer" from "Shut Down" to "Ask me what to do".   After that, the "Shut Down Windows" pop-up now appears (the one you see when you click Start | Shutdown).  I press Cancel in that pop-up, it goes away, but a fraction of a second later, power off occurs.  This is happening on every shutdown that I'm here to witness.

 - When I go to turn the power back on, the first time I press the power button and let it up, nothing happens.  The next time, it starts up.

 - Frequently, shutdwon occurs on power up during the BIOS execution.

 - As I mentioned in an earlier post, some of my settings have been changed.  One set I didn't mention is the Power Options Properties | Power Schemes settings.  The Power Scheme selected has been changed more than once.

 - Shutdown occurs when the computer is in Sleep mode.

 - my internal wireless adapter stopped working, even after Repairing and disabling/re-enabling.  It won't find any wireless networks anymore.  Don't know if that's related...

Thanks!

PS: I decided not to mess with the BIOS upgrade since it didn't help RamGuy (thanks for sending the link, though RamGuy!)

Well, that's it for me on this string, folks.  My T400 wouldn't get through the BIOS code at all today; can't boot it up at all.   So I've called Support and will be sending it in.  With the hope that I'll not see the problem any more, I wish you all good luck!

I have a disturbing development here.. I've had three power losses within half an hour?

It has gone from annoying but bearable (with about two - three power losses per day), if this trend with insane amount of power losses this frequently continues I have to admit it's no longer annoying but bearable, but rather useless?

Can't live with random power losses every half an hour or so..

Hopefully it will stabilise a little and go back to two - three power losses every twenty-four hour otherwise I have to send it to Lenovo Norway right away! I have no idea why it suddenly starts to hit so much more frequently than before, there has been no driver, BIOS or any other significant changes to the computer or software lately, so I can't see anything that might have had an impact on this.

There is definitely something wrong with your machine, RamGuy459.  I thought I had a similar ocurrence, but I was running my machine without a battery and the electrical extension cord I was using had a broken contact.  When I moved  the electrical junction (between the machine's plug and the exention cord) slightly, it stopped providing AC power.  That isn't the fault of the machine, and it's not your problem either.

You should be able to run your machine without *any* random power drops!  Even 2 or 3 a day is unacceptable.   Aside from the bogus one I described, I haven't had a single unexpected shutdown on my T400s.  Something must have gone wrong with your build.

At least mine is back to the good old steady to - three random power drops per day again.

No idea why it suddenly decided to go haywire that morning.

Perhaps I should just send it to Lenovo Norway to get rid of this annoying issue ones and for all, in the same time I just might complain about the dead pixel I received along with it.

The only downside is the fact that I have to expect to live without my T400s for quite a while, approximately about two - three weeks I guess Which isn't that amusing considering it being my primary computer at the moment, playing a solid role in my daily usage and routines.

I bet Lenovo Norway is starting to get a bit frustrated on me as well, I've just sent them my disappointing piece of hardware (the SL300) which had some really funny failures from the very beginning as well (you might not call it failures, but some rather annoying and silly "bugs") which after a while nagged me so much that I got rid of the whole thing and just sent it back the same day it wouldn't work with my Intel X25-E Enterprise SSD hard drive at all anymore, this is where the T400s came in as an more expensive but well worth upgrade, which it indeed has been if we ignore this power loss issue.

I'm not that trilled with being forced to send it back, at least not considering how long I have to expect to live without my primary computer, but I guess what has to be done, has to be done.. Right? :)
