Re: T400s random shutdowns

2010-02-09, 20:58 PM

I got the same basic issues as the rest, periodic shutdowns....

I also go mine from the MS Store.  I just noticed they are now 50% off!  So $775 for this box is a good deal if these issues can get resolved.  I bought mine at 40% off a couple of weeks ago... oh well.

I purchased the extended warranty, onsite, ADP, for 3 years from Lenovo.  Make sure you get Lenovo to adjust your warranty for date of purch.  I had some problems with that, but you may not.

Good luck.  I hope these MB replacements do the trick.  Otherwise this box will be on eBay soon.

My t400s sometimes becomes suddenly dead without any reason. It happens when I am using the battery. Does anyone has the similar problem?

This has been discussed, it seems to be a problem with a small amount of t400s laptops.  Best advice is to call up Lenovo and see what options they present you.

Uhhh... Probably a large amount of these laptops, with a handful of people ever hitting this site and thread.

I don't see why every T400s would not have this issue at some level.  Unless Lenovo identified the problem a long time ago and has either a new build for the T400s, or decided to create the T410s 6 months later in anticipation of the problem.

Take the lead from Toyota and have the good sense and taste to issue a recall.

We have 3 T400s units here...

1 ordered in September last year = Reboots (MB replaced in November, still reboots).

2 ordered in December last year = both fine

So i think it was only with the early batch of T400s.

Sugrat;

Can you find out the Planar FRU number on those MB's?  See Houtsma's earlier thread.  My box is also from Sept.  I was able to look it up online thru Lenovo using model and SN number.

That would be a big help to some of us on this thread.  So Far Mark_Lenovo has not released that info to us.

Thanks in advance.

Bios versions, etc. seem irrelevant for tis problem. Only thing that is interesting from now for this shutdown problem is the revision number of your MB. You can only find this number on a sticker on the MB itself. I wrote these numbers down when the engineer changed my MB this week:

Old motherboard: Planar FRU PN 43Y9976

New motherboard: Planar FRU PN 60Y5693

So only info we are still lacking is the answer to the following question:

"From which MB revision number has this problem been tackled (new voltage controller)?"

How hard can it be to provide us this kind of info?? I am starting to think that Lenovo is afraid to wake up sleeping dogs (ppl with older revisions, that do not have this problem....)? In the Netherlands Lenovo technical support still has no official reference or information what new MB revision to provide to customers with this problem.

Regards,

Jan

Thanks for your response 2801AQU

How often is the shutdown for your system and when it started ? I got mine yesterday but no shutdown so far. Thanks God.

My box was packed on 25th Sep 09.

Mark_Lenovo : Can you tell me from which date onwards the MB issues were fixed by Lenovo, packed & shipped. Thanks

Re: T400s random shutdowns

ThinkPad_08, Houtsma,

43Yxxxxx boards could be affected, but not all are since this is a tolerance issue.     From what we have seen, a user will either have this problem or not.   Replacing with another 43Yxxxx board could have been "rolling the dice" as other members have suggested in the past.  Chances are good the replacement would not have exhibited the symptoms,  but there were cases reported here in the forum where the replacement produced them too.

In Nov / Dec the 60Y series boards were introduced to manufacturing and should not exhibit these symptoms, and then in January a further revision 63Y was introduced which incorporated some additional updates not related to this symptom.   60Y and later boards provided through service should not exhibit this symptom.

I understand these requests so that customers will have confidence their symptoms are being conclusively resolved by the replacement board.    Customer who experience this symptom should contact service, however if a system is not exhibiting these symptoms, no proactive measures are required, except ensuring BIOS 1.12 or later is applied.

Houtsma,

Based on your report, we are following up with service to ensure the tips are being reviewed.   Could you send me a PM with your service case number and further details?   Thanks!

Best regards,

Mark
