Thinkpad_08:

It happens a couple of times a week.  Figure all these boxes that have the MB FRU 43Y9976 are problematic,   ours being of that build.  Hopefully you bought that box cheap, so there is some consolation in all this BS.

Re: T400s random shutdowns

Mark,

I contacted Lenovo in Switzerland to get the shut down issue fixed. Lenovo had the service and repair business outsourced to a smaller company and I have to send my notebook there. However, I had to call a hotline and will not get the chance to talk to an engineer. It seems to be a fully automated process. How can I find out whether they know about the problem and if they have an idea, which mainboard revision they have to use?

Regards, Christian.

It is important that you determine ahead of time whether the service facility is aware of the history of this problem and of the Lenovo engineered solution reported here by Mark.

In conversations with four different techs this week at Lenovo's Atlanta service center, none were aware of the problem.  Of the two who tried, neither found information in whatever technical databases they have access to.

One wanted to begin to run a series of diagnostics and wanted me to confirm that I had reformatted the HD and reinstalled the OS.  That conversation did not last long.

Lenovo has not provided adequate (if any) information to their field support organization to assure that a customer with this problem can get an expedited MB replacement.

Mark_Lenovo:

So what gives... you seem to have the MB numbers, build dates, etc, but you won't/can't give us a reference number we can use when we call support.  You holding back on us, or is this MB stuff just a smoke screen and Lenovo really has nothing to offer on this problem?

Re: T400s random shutdowns (NOT SOLVED)

2010-02-12, 3:06 AM

Lenovo support told me that the problem is not the camera and not the power supply, but rather that motherboard.  The tech said the rationale for this conclusion is in a document called "migr-74679" at the website -- but I can't find such a titled document at either Lenovo.com or IBM.com.  Can anyone  find the link?

In any event, I can't report on the efficicacy of this solution because Lenovo also says it's out of the corrected motherboards and there is no date for restocking. . .

Lenovo support tells me that the problem is inherent in the motherboard of the T400s and they would dispatch a tech to change mine out -- but the motherboard is out of stock...

The techie said the support for this conclusion was in an article logged as #MIGR-74679.  I can't find this article at the Lenovo or IBM sites, can anybody else find it to see if it makes sense as as the explanation of these shut downs?

Thanks.

Can someone who's had their mobo replaced explain the quality of the repair?

The motherboard is pretty central to the unit and I imagine that replacing it pretty much means gutting the machine.  When the repair was complete, did your machine still feel tight and secure, clean and high quality? Were there gouges, marks or any damage left by tools or screwdrivers used to pry the machine apart?  Did the technician use a proper static mat and wrist grounds?  Does the lid still close properly?  Etc.

I'm seriously considering just getting a new machine.  I don't mind spending the money, but what I don't want is a shoddy repair and an unreliable laptop.

Maybe I'll send this one back as registered mail to the CEO of Lenovo.  He clearly needs the money more than I do.

Interesting. I can't find anything on it on Lenovos website either. These are the latest documents relating to the t400s:
"http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&tbo=1&q=t400s%20%20MIGR%20site%3Awww-307.ibm.com&tbs=rltm:1&ei=oPx0S6yXDoLStgPWyJTMCA&sa=X&oi=tool&resnum=1&ct=tlink&ved=0CB4QpwU"
No mention of a recent motherboard problem. Maybe it will popup on their site soon

As I sit here contemplating whether or not to call for service on this MB issue, and probably go through a 2+ hour song and dance on why it needs to be replaced,  if anyone has just done a low level format and a clean install of Win 7.  I'd be tempted to just let Win 7 find the drivers, and forget all the other Lenovo crap, unless I ran into a major hurdle.

Anyway, just curious if anyone has done this yet.
