USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

Re: Brand new Lenovo ThinkPad T400s (NSDCVMN / 2808CVG) suddenly shutting down?

hope this thread ain't dead yet - I and another user are experiencing the same thing!

System Model:              281524U

BIOS Version:              LENOVO 6HET21WW (1.06 ), 7/27/2009

Vista Businesss SP2

I'll reboot at night before I leave, come back, and it's off.  Power up, and then it tells me Windows shutdown unexpectedly.

I've also had it power off in the middle of my work day - currently happens randomly, but about 4-5 times a week.

That's two out of ten users with a T400s here - living with it for now, but hoping for an easy fix.

Will try the rest of the week "undocked"

Mine is still suffering from this power loss issue, I've ordered myself a "ThinkPad 3 Years On-site Repair, Next Business Day response / partnr: 41C9432" and will for sure be contacting Lenovo Norway right away after receiving it, unfortunately for me it seems to take ages for it to arrive, they said about 14 days, it's now been almost 20?

T400s sudden shutdown

2009-09-17, 6:48 AM

Hello

About one to three times per 24h, my T400s simply shuts down.

No warning, no message, just blank screen, like a power loss. When starting it again, it runs normally.

The shutdown occurs during normal operation as well as when the notebook is in standby.

I am running Win7 / 64bit RTM with latest drivers and software suggested by ThinkVantage Updater.

On a second T400s with with the same configuration, the problem never appears.

Is this a hardware defect or is there some known solution?

Thanks a lot for any hints.

Hi,

I've had this problem before on a similar computer.

What was wrong with this one was the hardware to measure CPU temperature.

It was broken/damaged and reported to the computer that the CPU was overheating and should do an emergency shutdown.

That's my experience with this kind of problem.

Check fans and make sure the PC is actually not overheating either!

Some time back there was a thread started by some users that reported the same problem-- search this forum for "T400s suddenly shutting down".   I don't recall reading about any workaround; I assume it was determined to be a hardware problem.

Re: T400s sudden shutdown

Hi everybody,

I have the same problem as mhaldima, but my lenovo is a ThinkPad T500 P8400, with Windows Vista 32 bit. It suddenly shutdown when the CPU is running at 100% and battery  and ac-adaptor are both plugged-in. To restart the machine I have to remove the battery, otherwise the power botton doesn't work. It seems like a overheating problem. I tried changing the battery, using a more powerfull ac-adaptor, cleaning the cooling fan, replacing motherboard with a new one, but  the problem still exists. Does anyone have suggestions? Thank you!

@ Burd: I can't find the topic that you have suggested, can you post the link here?

Re: T400s sudden shutdown

It sounds like the T400s issue is indeed related to using Win7 RTM and early drivers. I've been using two preproduction T400s models for a few weeks now without issues. One is running Vista Business and the other is a multitouch version with Win7. Even the Win7 drivers I have aren't final, so I wouldn't expect everything to run smoothly.

@mrme - you don't have the same problem as anyone else here. You aren't running the same OS and don't have the same system, plus your symptoms are different. If you haven't already, I would post a new thread. It does indeed sound like overheating, or too much power being drawn.
