Re: T400s random shutdowns

Hello,
I'm having random shutdowns with my T400s.

Seems that an uninstall of the Power Management Drive solves the problem, but I´m not sure...

Maybe the driver interact with the Windows Powermanagemant service..?

Or should I try to get a replacement-board from Lenovo Service?

Re: T400s random shutdowns

2011-01-25, 3:31 AM

So I was recently given a t400 as a gift while my my father moved up to a more robust t510. Almost immediately I'veencountered the random shutdown issue. I've spent the last couple of hours trying to narrow the problem as much as I can.From what I can tell, the shutdown is hardware based. There is no error code, or BSOD from windows, the system simplybecomes sluggish and then completely dies. The issue have has been happening 2-3 times per day since I've had thecomputer. It has happened while browsing the web, compiling, and gaming.

The computer was run through prime95 for about 3 hours before failing to a hard reset. The temps during the 3hr werehigh but still under the maximum temps set for the T9600 by Intel. The highest temp that I saw was 89* C.

I have however noticed a pattern in the hard locks and have been able to recreate them pretty regularly. If I run winrar toextract a rar. file sufficiently large (2gb+) and attempt to browse the web or do anything else for that matter, the computeralways crashes to a hard reset. I can make the computer crash even faster by running prime 95 and winrar at the same time.That might seem like overkill, but my other computer (Dell latitude D630) had no issue with hard reseting under any heavyload. The point is, that the hard resets seem to happen typically under heavy load.

From my experience with computers, and the fact that this issue has persisted through a number of different controls(different battery, no battery, different operating systems, etc...), I can say that this is almost certainly a hardware issue withthe motherboard itself. Tomorrow, I will be calling in for an RMA while the warranty on the laptop is still good.

My question though, for some people who already gone through this issue is whether the new motherboard actually stopsthe hard resets. I also hope that I am not to late to the game seeing how the t400 has been out of production for a while.

Here are the specs

T400

T9600

4gb of ram

Gm45/Gm47

ICH9-m southboard

It is a great laptop none the less. I just hope that this issue can be fixed.

Yes, systemboard replace solved this problem. This is the only solution.

Re: T400s random shutdowns

Hello forum, I knew of this problem last year when i was still under warranty. However at the time i was not experiencing any problems, it was a flawless machine. Rather than waste resources shipping a machine I trusted my machine never to fail.

Now at 14months (2 past "warranty") the t400s of course shuts down several times a day and as you know is basically unuseable.

I have called lenovo but obviously the reps are not nearly as knowledable as members here. Is there any way lenovo will service this machine which is out of warranty due to this known defect. Thanks for your time.

Hi, I have the same issue as chented above. I called and the reps told me I have to pay to replace, which is more than $300. I don't understand as this is not something like our error. The error is already there since the machine is out for sale! HP, Nvidia did replace a whole bunch of laptop/chip for the similar condition. My laptop is like unusable now!!! Mark, pls help!!!

To Mark_Lenovo,

I have searched for fixes for this issue for the past 18 months and just came across your thread.

My September 2009 build T400s has had the random shutdown issue since day one.  I have searched for a solution at various times but never found this thread previously.

Can you please direct me to the correct service group to have the system board of my unit replaced?
