Re: T410 giving Fan Error

Hej, did you fix your fan error problem by replacing the fan?

My fan is working every second time I turn the machine on.

Seem to work better when you use the computer and not let it 'rest'....

For me, there was no need to replace the fan.  Just pressing and holding ESC while that message was popping up got rid of the whole error screen and my system booted up and turned on - good as new.

I'm having the same problem here. I removed the keyboard and manually started the fan spinning with the tip of a pen, then squirted a bit of very light oil on what I thougth was the bearings of the fan. Seems to be going OK for now, but to be sure I'll not turn it off until I can order a replacement fan.

I just called Lenovo service to see if the'd be of any help... They refused to speak with because I wasn't under warranty and wouldn't give them a credit card. Then I spoke with general Lenovo information and they said they weren't aware of any fan issues on the T410 :-)!

I'm very disappointed that Lenovo is a joke these days, especially their service. The only good thing I can say about Thinkpad laptops (I've had 4 in about 3 years, plus their miserable Thinkpad Tablet which has never worked properly) is that they're so simply built that I can swap out parts pretty easily on my own.

But I shouldn't have to deal with this crap. It's not like the T410 was a budget laptop when I bought it 1.5 years ago.

Lenovo, your service is crappy and your premium products break.

Why should I buy another Lenovo product?

The light oil might have fixed it?

Did you try holding ESC while the computer is turning on and loading?  That bypassed the 'fan error' page for me,  without having to take any bit of the computer apart.

Yes it worked. The thing is that I intend to sell the computer so it's not an ideal solution.

Possibly- but the fan never made noise and seems to be fine. The error message itself is the error in my view.
It seems to be a common problem, this message coming on after you've shut it off the laptop for a while.
It's been back on 4 days without any issue at all.
Good luck

Re: T410 giving Fan Error

I would recomend anyone still having issues with their fan to work Lenovo over hard on getting the unit repaired under warranty.

Lenovo was aware of this issue probably 2 years ago now.

They sent out a tech bullitin basically stating that any T410 unit manufactured before 6/30/11 should get the fan replaced upon the first signs of failure or getting the  "Fan error" message.

I replaced 100 - 150 if not more of these fans. Typically 3 or 4 on a Monday morning after a weekend. (Even more if it was a 3 day weekend) Out of the 150 some fans I had fail 149 of them were the FRU 45M2722. I had 1 single fna failure on the updated fan FRU 45M2724.

Before this issue started happening Lenovo was sending back fan FRU 45M2722 when we sent the bad one in for repair, those would only turn around and fail a short time later after being replaced.  Somewhere around Dec 2011 they started sending FRU 45M2724 as the replacement.  Once that FRU is installed the problem is solved.

Work over Lenovo if you find you have the defective FRU.  PM a mod on this forum and push them as well. I saw a person or two get their issue resolved through mods here in the past.

If all else fails and Lenovo has filed a restarining order on you for cussing out multiple service reps then find the replacement fan (45M2724) on eBay. If your handy with a screwdriver you can swap it out in 45 mins. (My record is 23 min 05 seconds ... blindfolded)

GL All!

Thx a lot. Its obvious that I have a defect fan. Are you suggesting that I contact Lenovo and ask them to send me a new fan? I there a reference to this bulletin you mentioned?

Sorry I don't have any reference to the service bulletin, this was at a job I left over a year ago now.

But yes pressure Lenovo to getting it serviced under warranty, PM a Mod here, then do it yourself if all else fails.
