Re: T410s battery drains quickly while suspended.

2011-04-03, 20:43 PM

Mine resumes correctly on suspend. It is set to hibernate after a few hours but the drain is still excessive. I used to have flcker as described above with volume still enabled etc. That has stopped but I think a windows update fixed that. I have all timers, usb enablers etc disabled. I am still at a loss why so much drain.  I really wonder if it is the way Lenovo & the SSD integrate.  One thing for sure I find Solid State Drives definitely reduce battery performace on my laptops.

I might be wring but to me the hard drive  (wether SSD or standard) should be totally off during suspend or hibernate. I don't see how this woudl impact the batterie life. I agree that 7% over 10h is not that great. I would rather suspect the 8GB of ram to be responsible for this, as the ram does need power in suspend mode, not in hibernate.

On my side anyway I stopped  to worry about this, with my SSD (Crucial C300, not from Lenevo) the start up time from hibernate is less than 10 secs: during the day I use suspend and over a week-end I use hibernate/switch off.

Good luck :-)

Just a random idea... Does pulling the SSD drive while suspended reduce battery drain? Not sure if Windows will flail if you pull the SSD during suspend and put it back in before resuming.

Wouldn't know how to do that as it is main drive.

Since memory needs power and causes power drain wouldn't a SSD do the same?

7% over 10 hours is excessive.  To be honest I purchased an ultrabay battery (not a great fit but does fit none the less) and am done with complaining but battery drain is very fast on the T410s.  And that is with power saving settings in place & a screen that is difficult to see.  All previous Lenovo's never had such problems but none w. SSD.

The SSD should stop receiving power in Standby or at least go into very low-power mode...

You can find drive removal instructions in the T410s maintenance manual here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-72739.html

Although it says to unplug the battery first, it should be fine considering SATA is hotpluggable.

I am not thinking of going that far at this time.  I did remove my USB mouse dongle and try that a while ago.  That made no difference.  I also shut off the Wifi/Bluetooth switch and it did not help.  Basically w. 2 batteries my drain while suspended over night is 15%.

Also I don't think my PC hibernates if I suspend while plugged in.  I have it set to not hibernate while plugged in.  BUt when on battery it is set for 20 minutes.  I guess it remember the battery state while docked and suspended and uses that profile for power settings while suspended to monitor when to hibernate.

This might help: enter command line in admin mode, then enter "c:\powercfg -ENERGY". You will get an html report describing what goes wrong in your laptop power management.

On my side, the only point which could explain the sleep mode battery drain is:

Platform Power Management Capabilities:PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) Disabled

PCI Express Active-State Power Management (ASPM) has been disabled due to a known incompatibility with the hardware in this computer.

I am investigating this but so far my google reserach did not yield anything useful.
