T410s overheated and now won't even POST

2015-07-07, 6:24 AM
I was watching Wimbledon today and suddenly my machine shut down. Overheated because it was on the couch. No big deal, I put it on the coffee table and re-started. It went right to CHKDSK and then booted to W7 without issue. But, even though it said it was connected to the internet, it wouldn't access the internet. A series of sfc /scannow brought me to a topic on the microsoft unified telemetry client being a bad update so I removed that, to no avail. In the midst of all this the computer shut down again, and the fan area was extremely hot again. So, more research, more confusion. And that brings us to now. I shut down the computer to allow it time to completely cool down, and it would even post. The power button ring of green shows up, and the KB and spot light briefly shine, and then back to the green ring of power. I see some folks have mentioned similar issues, and I'm wondering if there is a common resolution. Thanks in advance!

Unplug the AC adapter, unplug the main battery.
Press the power button 10 times, the press and hold for 30 seconds.
Reattach the AC adapter and try booting it again.

If that doesn't work, take off the heatsink and see if the CPU has fried.

Hi Blastphemist,

If you are looking out to remove the system, in that case check with cleaning CPU fan & apply thermal paste above the CPU before fixing the heat-sink.

Hardware Maintenance Manual

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Hemanth Kumar

I had already blown out the fan without any changes, so I brought the HDD to an outfit to get tested and discovered that it was obliterated by the heat. SMART showed it hit 200 degrees. No idea about the CPU and MB yet, still waiting on the replacement drive. What a mess. Surely I should have had some type of integrated warning that disaster was imminent. I'm looking at a few hundred dollars now.

Replacement of hard drive solved the problem. I'm still somewhat stymied why the bad HDD would prevent power-up, but at least it is fixed. Thanks for all the recommendations!
