Fan performance in Power Manager set?

Where is that option? I've looked everywhere and cannot find any fan settings in Power Manager.

I think JameZ meant the "fan optimization" which you can find in power manager > advanced > system settings

Re: T420 Fan noise / HDD noise

I played a little bit with the BIOS settings and I found out that you have to change the Power settings to get a slower fan rotation.

Go to BIOS > Config > Power
Set both modes to "battery optimized"
Set both schemes to "balanced"

Even I'm only on battery (and battery was already set to the settings above) the fan now reduces its rotation to 2000rpm till the temperature reaches 49°C, then it spins up to 3000rpm.
Can anyone reproduce this behavior?

Found it, didn't see the System Settings section under Power Plan.

T420 fan noise ?

2011-07-29, 14:14 PM

I currently own a T400 7417-TUU. I am thinking of going with a T420. I want to stay with the 14.1 screen and want a model with equal fan noise. My T400 is very quiet all the time. You have to put your ear right up to the bottom of the unit to hear it.  I also want a model that has the thinklight. Is this the right model to choose ? Thanks

I have a T520 that arrived a month ago.  I have a SSD

The T520 is silent 95% of the time and is very quiet the rest.  No fan pulsing or noises.

I have T520 too (NW64FMC), but for some reson I'm experiencing the "constantly-running-fan" noise, as lenovoT420 and Ispcity. This is my first ThinkPad, so I just wanted to ask, is it normal that the fan does never stop?

After updating BIOS, operating system and Lenovo software, I tried out the passive setting in the Power Manager, turned all settings in BIOS to "battery optimized" with no success :smileymad: Only using the TP Fan Control the ventilation stopped and the computer was completely silent (no sound at all) for a couple of moments and switched back to low speed and back again to silent.

I don't think that the Fan Control utility is meant to be a final solution. Is it possible to make the fan more silent using the Lenovo software?

Hi Starko,

I've kept my ThinkPad, because of the great display resolution and the low price for students.

I've found out that the most heat comes from my HDD which spins with 7200 rpm.

I think if you use only SSDs the laptop isn't heating up so much and doesn't influence the sensors for the cpu fan any more.

I want to buy a 300 GB SDD, but currently it's to expensive for me ;-)

So is there someone who has only SSDs and can confirm my assumption?

Hi JameZ,

is there some progress on this issue with the T420? I know there are at least some attempts to deal with it by the T420s.

When can we expect a BIOS update for the T420?

Is engineering aware of this issue with the T420? Are they investigating it as they perhaps are investigating the T420s?

Thanks
