T420 License Only - No OS Installed

2017-03-25, 15:41 PM

Hi guys,

I hope someone can please advise. I have came across a Grade A refurbished T420 from a Lenovo partner and Microsoft Certified Refurbisher here in the UK.

It shows as US English, should not be a problem, however, it shows as License Only- No OS Installed.

So my question is, does this mean I have to install my own operation system? do I have to find via Lenovo all the drivers etc.

They did say however I am sure that the product key will bbe on the license tag...any advice on how I go about this would be greatly appreciated.

See description below.

Scotty.

Re: T420 License Only - No OS Installed

The license is probably windows 7 and the key is only valid for an OEM install from disks that you would need to order (buy) from Lenovo.  Installing windows 7 today is complicated.

Microsoft has not done well with windows 7 updates. A fresh install of windows 7 requires a lot of things to be downloaded, and the update process works poorly for win7. You need to update the servicing stack and do an update rollup before windows update will run at all. If you were ever going to update to windows 10, now is the time.

Try this:

Update servicing stack: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=46817

Then apply this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53332

Then retry windows update

Thanks richk,

So let me get this right.

1) Install operating system

2) Install update servicing stack.

3) Install the second one you linked too.

And then is it good to go?

Also,

Can I not download via this link:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows7

With regards to Windows 10, I spoke to Microsoft and I can still get it for nothing should I desire via this link due to my poor eyesight and disabilities, do you foresee a problem with that?

Many thanks for youe quick reply, your advice is appreciated.

Scotty

As far as I know, the Lenovo key will only let you install an OEM version.  If the machine came from a refurbisher, it is possible that they put a different sticker on the bottom (refurbisher key).  You would need to confirm that with the seller.  A refurbisher key would let you install an OS from MS.  The links I sent are to be used if windows update hangs when you are updating after any install.

I left something out.  You asked about windows 10.  People do run windows 10 on T420, although it isn't officially supported.  They are making windows 7 harder and harder to keep running.  I think that eventually you will be forced to upgrade, so this may be a good time.

FWIW I ran a clean install of Win 7 Pro on my T420 for years.  Activated using the OEM key from the sticker in the battery compartment.

It did require using phone activation but it wasn't a problem on the 420 or any of the other machines I've done clean installs on.

The OEM key won't let you download Win 7 from the Microsoft site.

That's great thanks richk really appreciate it.

I guess from what you are saying though and the way licensing works is that I need to install 7 first then 10 and not do a clean install of Win 10.

To add a little to what richk said:  if the free Win 10 you can access is an upgrade, you'll need to do that from an activated Win 7.  Once that's been done the Win 10 activation status will be stored on the MS servers.  You can then do a clean Win 10 install that should activate automatically.

Clean '10 installs seem to work much better than upgrades, in my admittedly limited experience.
