T420/T420s 9.7mm HDD

2012-01-24, 0:24 AM

Will the T420/T420s fit a 9.7mm HDD (such as the Seagate Momentus XT 750GB) or 9.5mm (Momentus XT 500GB) in the main HDD bay?

The data sheet on the Momentus XT 750GB ST750LX003 indicates it is a 9.5mm drive, not a 9.7mm drive - this will fit on the T420 in the main drive bay, but not on the T420s which requires 7mm devices.

The choices for the T420s limit the user to regular 7mm hdd's (not hybrids like the Momentus XT) or straight 7mm SSD drives (you may use a 9.5mm drive but that requires removing the spacer if the drive has a removable spacer. However, be aware that removing the spacer on an SSD drive voids the manufacturer's warranty, although some claim that Intel, among others, still provides warranty services despite spacer removal).

EDIT:

Just noticed that the "specifications" section claims the drive in question is 9.7mm, whereas the data sheet indicates 9.5mm for this model. Seems there's something amiss - divergence in listed specifications . You may wish to contact Seagate to get a clearer understanding of their product specs.

At this point, I'm not quite sure a 9.7mm drive will fit the T420, although a 0.2mm difference shouldn't pose too much of a problem. Given that the rubber bumpers are slightly taller than a 9.5mm drive itself, I would assume you could fit the 9.7mm drive into the T420 bay, although it may be a wee-bit of a squeeze.

Thanks. Checked the datasheet for the 2nd gen and it's 9.5 ± 0.2 mm. Shouldn't be a problem then.
