T420 Very high CPU temp on full load?

2011-08-04, 18:20 PM

I have got my T420 laptop for a while now with the i7 2620M... lately i did some testing and with prime95 running CPU at full load the tempurature shoots right up to the 90C range and tops off around 95C... is this normal ?

Also when the stress test stops the temp just goes down to 60C ish in like 10 seconds...

My T420:
Intel Core i7 2670QM 2.2GHz / 8GB DDR3 1600 / ST Momentus XT 750GB / Nvidia Quadro 4200M / Intel HD 3000 / Wifi 6300N / 720p Webcam

I think this is normal. I've seen the same CPU temperatures in other Lenovo laptops.

Believe it or not, some of the Intel mobile CPUs are rated to run at 100 degrees C or more...

It's not normal.

Go to the Power Manager software and under your profile>system settings>system performance> change for battery and plugged in to "Balanced".

what is your temperature when doing normal work? browser, some coding maybe? ... mine is about 48-51 C and the fan never stops - is always rorating on aprox. 1900rpm (cant hear it). shouldnt the fan stop sometimes?

i've downloaded thinkpad fan controller where i set fan to stop, when temperature is under 50C.

@mcs_dodo,
If you don't hear the fan, I wouldn't recommend having it stop under 50C. The fan (and hard drive) do not like being repeatedly spun up/spun down; most of the wear to the parts happen during spin up. There is almost no wear to the fan when the fan is continually spinning.

Which browser do you use? Some browsers like to use a bit more CPU than others. Try running IE9 instead for a while and see the temperatures go down.

thanks for fast answer. i will let BIOS to handle fan speed then.

my other question is what is your normal temperature, when working?

im using chrome most of the time, FF only because of firebug when working, ie only for testing purposes. unfortunately i dont have time to run only one browser for much long...

It is normal for the temps to shoot up, that is why it is called stress testing.

Re: T420 Very high CPU temp on full load?

2011-12-12, 2:15 AM

I was running some tests and emerging some updates on my T420 when I noticed this in dmesg:

kernel: [ 4719.848181] CPU3: Core temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 1851)
kernel: [ 4719.848184] CPU2: Core temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 1851)
kernel: [ 4719.848188] CPU1: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 1851)
kernel: [ 4719.848191] CPU0: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 1851)
kernel: [ 4719.848194] CPU2: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 1851)
kernel: [ 4719.848197] CPU3: Package temperature above threshold, cpu clock throttled (total events = 1851)
kernel: [ 4719.849201] CPU2: Core temperature/speed normal
kernel: [ 4719.849202] CPU3: Core temperature/speed normal
kernel: [ 4719.849205] CPU1: Package temperature/speed normal
kernel: [ 4719.849207] CPU0: Package temperature/speed normal
kernel: [ 4719.849209] CPU3: Package temperature/speed normal
kernel: [ 4719.849211] CPU2: Package temperature/speed normal
kernel: [ 4794.600368] [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged

and immediately ran 'acpi -t' which said 91 degrees celsius (195.8 Fahrenheit). This is on Linux, btw. I rebooted in Windows and ran the first CPU stress test Google pointed me. I also used some CPU temperature tool I found. The CPU temperature jumped to ~94 degrees, but I've seen nothing in the event viewer about a hardware error. The fans are on "auto" but I switched them to maximum speed. I'd like to use this notebook for the next three-four years if posible. :-)

So, how worried should I be about that "Hardware Error" message?

Hi all

It should be ok as long as the system does not shutdown or off instantly during the stress test. Maybe try TPFanControl, set it to Manual: 64 and you could get a lower / better temperature results. I would use TPFanControl when I am playing games or heavy multitask.

Re: T420 Very high CPU temp on full load?

Hey guys,
I have the same machine/processor and have this same excat problem. Being a system builder it is hard to see temps that high and it made me worried so I called Lenovo. They say the chip is rated to 100 degrees c and it being at 95 is close to failure. Make sure you are in high performance mode and in a cool environment while under load. I only got these temps when emulating console games, but still a processor should never be running at this high of temps under load for a extended period of time. Try tp fan controller or get a labtop chill mat. While under load with a chill mat it's stays at a consistent 65 degrees c which is good running temp under load for this CPU. I think Lenovo needs to come out with their own fan optimizers for their labtops since gamers and high intensive applications need better fan speed. Also make sure you enable Lenovo turbo boost(i7 only) under power manager !
