T420 Windows 7 Pro - suddenly 'no audio device installed' ( Conexant)

2016-05-22, 0:13 AM

The audio was fine, until suddenly the tray icon was red x'd. Tried updating drivers- Windows Device Manager says
'no audio device installed'.  Uninstalled it, re-installed  from Lenovo Drivers.  Conexant 20672 Smart Audio HD, driver  8.32.44.  Still not recognized.  System Restore did Not fix it.  Researching brings no clear answers to  a cause or solution

There was this in the driver properties, Device Manager--for both the Conexant Smart Audio
& the Intel Display Audio drivers:

'Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or
software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious
software from an unknown source. (Code 52)'

Why this suddenly became a problem, I don't know, because it was all fine earlier that day and every other day.,

and the drivers do show as  signed  when  I got the list of available drivers in the option
'Let me choose the drivers to install'.

However, I've found a work-around that has reclaimed the laptop's audio function.. . Shut down, and upon powering up, click the F8 and scroll down to Disable  driver signature verification--problem solved.

Oh  it turns out this work-around is temporary--upon rebooting it  reverts back. and the disabling has to be repeated.  but so far the only solution I've found that works for me

Can anyone  please help me ?  :smileysad:  Here is the problem ::

In the  T420 Windows 7 Device Manager  -Conexant 20672  audio driver details, there is a list of 13 individual drivers,  2 of which are unsigned.  The  2 unsigned drivers are preventing the whole Lenovo download driver package from being recognized,  thus causing ''no audio device installed'.

This needs to be FIXED in the driver package download,  or else somebody please provide a 'secret fix-it'.   The Conexant website is no help whatsoever.  Why this was not a problem, until months ago  suddenly one day it was--haven't a clue.  The only way for me to get audio is to use the workaround of F8 at boot-up  and click  'disable driver signature enforcement'  every time.

What's odd is that my other  Windows 7 Lenovo laptop (G580), while using a different Conexant driver package, also has the same 2 unsigned drivers in its list, yet never a problem with the audio.

Lenovo Support ?   Hello ?  Is anyone there  ? ?

It's been 6 + months now that the 2 faulty audio drivers  have killed  the sound in my,T420 . (Windows 7 /64)
.  .The  audio driver package  has 2 unsigned drivers of  the 13., resulting in the error
'no audio device installed'.

I can't do anything to fix this other than the temporary work-around,
. . . . .. . ... but--you, Lenovo, can, I would guess, or certainly hope so.

The downloaded  Conexant  20672 audio driver package  file name  is   83a120ww  exe

It is certainly possible that there is no good fix.  My guess is that the audio chip is getting sick and doesn't respond fast enough at start-up.  When you restart, it is already warmed up.

Any time I do a restart  I get the red X'd  audio icon  and the 'no audio device installed' error', not only on startup, and the F8 choice of  'Disable Driver Signature Enforcement' will get the sound working, but that must be repeated on every boot.  So I think it isn't about things being warmed up.  It seems  logical to me  that if the sound chip was going bad then the disabling of driver signatures wouldn't make a difference.
