T420 running Windows 7 has "missing operating system"

2012-08-05, 23:49 PM

While working on my laptop, the computer crashed and later gave me a "missing operating system" message. I don't have any Windows 7 discs; I saw on the forum instructions for fixing ThinkPads running Vista, but not Win 7. Does anyone have experience with how to fix this? Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hello and welcome.

There are repair disks available for download.  Neosmart has one.  They charge for it these days IIRC.

If you know anyone with a machine running Win 7 of the same "bitness" 32 or 64, they should be able to burn you a Windows repair disk:  Start -> Maintenance -> Create a system repair disk

Not saying that a repair disk would fix the problem, but it's worth a shot.

[edit] I should have also pointed out that you can download and burn a full Windows 7 install DVD ISO and use that: Legal Resources for Downloading Windows 7

can you restart the system into the recovery partition (press blue thinkvantage button) during boot-up? i haven't needed to do so in a long time, but i seem to recall a repair capability along with the option to completely reimage the disk.

I did try the blue button, but unfortunately, I did not see an option to restart or restore the system. If all else fails and I don't care about the files on my laptop, is there an easy way to wipe it clean and just have a working computer?

what did you see when pressing the thinkvantage button during the boot cycle? if nothing, then something may have damaged the boot loader on the hdd. i believe there is a lenovo utility that can fix accessibility to the recovery partition and allow you to use the rescue & recovery tools there.

When I hit the blue button, I get:

Startup Interrupt Menu
ESC to resume normal setup

F1 to enter BIOS setup Utility

F12 to choose temporary startup device

CTRL-P to enter Management Engine setup screen
