T420 shut down when running game

2011-09-15, 11:48 AM

Hi,

I'm having problem with my T420. The laptop shut itself off when running Windows Experience index.

I also ran thinkvantage toolbox scan, it shut down at certain stage.

Tried playing dragon age, it also shut itself off.

Does this means i have a faulty NVS4200 card?

@Lenzerovzero, did you get the machine from the centrecom sale?

What you are describing is a problem with overheating.

if you got the machine on sales, then you should probably keep it, because at that price you won't get many alternatives with that sort of specification.

The problem you are describing is most likely caused by overheating, as such lets try to verify it. Here is what you should do.

1. Download TPfancontrol (http://www.staff.uni-marburg.de/~schmitzr/donate.html)

2. Download prime95 (http://www.overclock.net/downloads/137251-prime95.html)

3. Install them both.

4. Run the TPfancontrol, and check the temp of CPU + GPU and whether that fan is working (xxxx RPM)

5. Run Prime95 and check the temp and fan, if the system shuts down note the temp of the CPU/GPU and RPM of fan.

Report back with result.

@lead_org
Yep, I got it from Centre com sales. I only have the laptop for about 2 weeks.
I will try your suggestion tonight, except I have to start from scratch as it won't boot to windows now (BSOD) after my last attempt to verify the issue by running Dragon age using NVS4200.

I tried running the game with Intel graphics, it didn't shut down.
Tried running intel graphics stress test in the thinkvantage toolbox, it passed the test. Too bad it doesn't have an option to test NVS4200 card.

Should i call lenovo warranty? What are the chance of Lenovo replacing it with brand new one?
I hate it if i have to send it away for repair and return with scratch all over the laptop.

Don't worry about trying the above test, just call 131 426, option 1 and then 3. This is a fairly easy fix at the depot. Between 8 am and 6 pm weekday. The DHL courier will come with a box, and there is a depot at Melbourne Dandenong (but they can only be accessed through courier).

Don't worry if the depot scratch it they will have to replace all the scratched parts, but do take photo of the laptop's exteriors to make sure (just in case). But if you have any problems with the depot or warranty service, leave a message (but i don't think you would need it).
