Will the ocz vertex 3 fit inside the T420 then? Does it have a larger bay?

Yes, from the tabook:
Some: Hard Disk Drive / SATA 3.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 9.5mm high, Active Protection SystemTM

That will cover all 2.5 inch SSDs and HDDs up to 750GB I think. The 1TB HDDs ones are 12mm.

The t420 will ship with a SATA III controller though won't it? I wouldnt want to have a OCZ vertex 3 and not utilize the full speed of the drive.

This 7mm issue sucks... I was really looking forward to a thin and light with a high-capacity SSD. Guess I'm going to have to stick with a fat T420... :smileysad:

Does anyone know if the power and SATA plugs on a 1.8" drive are spaced the same as they are on a 2.5" drive? If they are, would it be possible to finagle some kind of caddy to allow the 1.8" drives to fit snugly in the 2.5" 7mm space?

I believe they are.

Also, there are certain SSDs that are designed with the 7mm ceiling in mind: an example is this (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167028CVF) Intel X25-M (though watch out since the same SSD also comes in 9mm.
Unfortunately Intel isn't producing the 510 series in 7mm.

It's too bad the high-caliber drives don't come in 7mm.

Keep in mind also that some 1.8" SSDs are 8mm high (though I believe most are 5mm, like the Crucial RealSSD C300). I believe you'd need an adapter for the SSD to fit and be secure, though.

The book doesn't seem to say whether or not the 310-series drives (Rapid Boot) will be available in the T420s, though...

it sucks we can't use any speedier SSD in the T420s. I  already have a Kingston V++ 256GB but it's toooo big for this lenovo: 69.85 x 100 x 9.5 mm

what SSD is the standard/optional package with the T420s? what speeds (read/write)?

There are no drives yet that will benefit from the SATAIII speeds and that will also fit in the T420s ..

The Crucial C300 comes in a 1.8" package that would fit (with a caddy) in the T420s. I'm guessing that the new C400 series will probably come in the same form factor, so the 1.8" version of the C400 at 256GB might be the only option (at least initially) for new T420s owners who want higher performance and larger SSDs. Sadly, though, the C400 doesn't match the performance of the Vertex 3 drives...

I found the following review that shows that the Corsair Performance 3 is actually built on a 1.8" basis and it yields nice results:
http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/3868/corsair_performance_3_series_256gb_solid_state_drive_review/index4.html
Still not the Vertex 3, but significantly faster than SATA II.
Does anyone have experience with constructing a custom housing such that it might fit into the T420s?

Maybe we just have to wait for half a year and the slim large capacity SSDs are there.

Anybody have access to a MakerBot (http://www.makerbot.com/)? Somebody could probably do very well making custom housings to allow 1.8" drives to fit snugly in the T420s...

Call me an optimist, but: I am pretty confident that the storage industry will produce high-performance drives on this smaller envelope pretty soon, and it will be fun to upgrade the T420s with one of those in 6 months or a year.
