Re: T420S? can't wait for it? when?!

2011-01-12, 9:12 AM

Matt,

Can you tell us anything about the NVidia NVS 4200M? I mean performance wise, how does it compare? Because you had the computer on display, people could have checked the Windows Experience Index score in the computer? Can you tell us what points the NVS 4200M gets in Windows Experience Index, for example?

Thanks!

I'm sorry, but I didn't think to check the Win Experience score for the T420s when it was on display, so I don't know.  The machine was an early "SIT level" (no final paint, still not final tooling) machine, so there aren't a lot of them around to look at right now.  I will try and walk over to the Product Manager and see if he has one I can check.  Even if I am able to get a number for you, remember that drivers and firmware aren't final yet, so the shipping level score will undoubtably change a bit.

From your experience, do you believe that the final product will be ready in 2 mounts or so?

This is really interesting .. I mean, to have someone who actually is from LENOVO with us on the forum :)

Also, T420s seems very interesting too

Hi Matt,

Thanks in advance for checking. I know it is not a final product, and as such, not everything is finalized, but there is not much information about the NVS 4200 anywhere. A WEI score would at least roughly indicate where the card stands, even if the rating is not a final one yet.

(I do realize companies do not like to publish performance information on a product not yet final :) )

Let's hope this new screen can keep up wih the competition. The Apple Macbook Air has one of the best contrast ratios and brightness levels of any mobile lcd -- and it's 16:10 to boot! Let's hope lenovo puts something at least on par in the t420s in exchange for 16:9

The NVS3100m is a rebrand of the geforce 310m. As such, the 4200m is probably a rebrand of the geforce 420m, whose benchmarks you can find here: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-420M.35837.0.html

about 2x the 3100m. this means it (4200m) will be about 2x the speed of sandy bridge integrated graphics. not great, but not terrible.

I still haven't caught up with the Product Manager to see the Win Experience score.

If it helps identify which video chip it actually is, the chip is an Optimus chip.

(I must admit that my knowledge of discrete gfx parts is not what it should be.  I've always defaulted to integrated graphics on my notebooks.)

I will try again today.

Optimus is the technology that lets us switch LIVE from integrated to dedicated video card. At least that's how I know it .. not a master when it comes to this myself. What I usually do, I just look for benchmarks where both the new laptop and my current laptop are tested, if it's a good enough upgrade in performance I take it .. At least like that I know I don't go back to something that won't play/work at least as my current one.

Anyway, please let us know :)

Thank you

for those who love the 16:10 display this would be a hard blow - this was one of the top reasons to go with lenovo in the past for me
