What is the price difference between the two? And how do you use your machine.

Given the choice between the two, I'd buy the 4174-FM9.

Why?

SSD - I know I can survive with a 128GB SDD and I'd just end up purchasing a new SSD to upgrade the other one. Screen - higher resolution LCD. I'm quite fond of more resolution.

64-bit Windows  - I like my machines with at least 8GB of RAM and the other machine wouldn't be able to use it with 32 bit Windows.

Processor  - the i7-2620M is faster and has all of the fancy bells and whistles like turbo and support for Virtualization. The i3 doesn't.

Thinness / weight - The s model is slim and looks more modern. The standard T420 is bulky and weighs more.

Graphics - I prefer these models with Optimus because I can drive two external monitors and keep the internal LCD on. The other model only has integrated graphics.

The only downside to the 4174-FM9 is less battery life, and you could always purchase a spare battery.

X1 Carbon 3rd Gen Type 20BT i7-5500U, 2560x1440 (non-touch), Win 10 Pro, 8GB RAM, 512 SSD, Intel 7625 WiFi, BT 4.0 | ThinkVision P24q-10 monitor
