T420s BIOS update failed. Black Screen

2012-10-06, 13:14 PM

Hello all,

I have tried to update the BIOS with the tool provided from lenovo's website. It failed, and on the next reboot my laptop stays in a black screen. I have tried the wincrisis tool with no success. Maybe I am doing something wrong cause others say use fn+r others fn+b... Im not sure.

Any suggestions to save it myself before calling lenovo on monday?

Does waranty cover that case?

Its a Lenovo tool that did not work and should be covered.
I am well versed in the recover options. Have you tried the Thinkvantage blue button at all.

Press it immediately after power on repeatedly and see if something kicks in. Most newer bios chips keep a backup copy.

you would need a new motherboard, the warranty will cover it.

lead_org is spot-on.

call Service and tell them that a failed BIOS update has rendered your machine unbootable.

phone #s here: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=PD008370

for Germany, specifically: 0800-5004618, 8am-6pm M-F.

my personal experience is that i've never had a BIOS update fail using the bootable-CD method, and that's the only way i do them. when i'm messing with something as low-level as BIOS, i don't want anything else on the machine interfering.

regards.

edit: spelling.

Thank you all a lot for your help!

The thinkvantage button didnt work.

I will call first thing in on Monday the technical support. I just hope it wont take long to repair.

To be honst I would expect from a T' series thinkpad to have some kind of recovery on that subject. An automatic rollback or something. The target group are companies and having this damage done by a lenovo-tool makes it even worse.

Too bad the BLUE button can call up the ability to recover the BIOS. I have never pressed it. I might go down a dead ended road. So I killed my curiousity since my system is working ok.

The must be some other sequence to recover that. its a bit dumb. I recall buying and selling Gigabyte motherboard which had dual BIOS as well as other desktop board. Those board would not die if the MB update failed. It should know its now loading and revert or prompt to revert to the valid backup code.

Strange. I am going to watch this thread to see how this comes out.

I agree with this 100%.  I have never heard of the .ISO method failing.  It's the only method I'll use and I won't use it after the warranty for a machine expires.

Hello all again.

The warranty won't cover for that. So I have to consider alternative options.

Any suggestions? Do you know if I could order a BIOS Chip online and which version? Is there any other way to reflash this one?

They asked me 1500 euros to repair it. So any other option would be really appreciated.

Escalate the problem to customer relations at Lenovo.
The chip is integrated on the motherboard and they are not swappable. Without the tools to reflash it a motherboard swap it the only solution.
