Re: T420s Fan noise Issue

2012-03-28, 1:47 AM

Given the lack of input from ANY Lenovo Rep, I suspect Lenovo is now worried or anticipating a lawsuit and has instructed Mark (and others) to not comment further on this board.   And sure enough, just coincidentally a couple of you mentioned legal action.

To the last few posters - thanks for the warning....My concern is now that the T420s will cause a Fire in my home.

david44,

No, but discussion of legal action, or attempting to organize others is against the rules that everyone here agreed to when they signed up.   From the forum rules..

"Do not subvert threads. No vendetta posts, or online campaigning. It is acceptable to state concern for how a particular Lenovo policy, performance, or procedure does or does not meet the expectation of a particular member, but it is not acceptable to use this forum in an attempt to broadly organize or incite members en mass, to cancel orders, return systems, undertake legal action or otherwise disrupt the normal business processes of Lenovo."

Why do you feel your T420s will cause fire in your home?

This entire thread is about the fan running at higher than necessary an RPM (cooling a CPU that isn't particularly hot, cycling, or being overly loud.  The thread is not about overheating or any safety issue. Is is about an annoying acousic situation.

Edit - aside from namelessrabbit's post in which case he describes a fan that failed.  But the other zillion comments received are about complaints for how loud or how fast the fan spins.

We have released several BIOS updates and it resolved issues for many, but obviously not all customers.

To make progress on this, we need a sample system from a customer that is running Windows, lenovo power manager, and the latest version of BIOS.

Thanks

Mark

I can hardly believe so big company lacks just a test computer!!! To tell the truth is better than just an excuse.

NO,

there were many comments asking for specific questions that have never been answered. Given the fact that this thread is 100 pages long and Lenovo's only reply is "we cannot replicate", when there were legitimate and sensible questions, sure you can understand that people are infuriated and seeking service disruption. After all, we can't work with our expensive laptops without irritating people nearby.

People here have given advice, shared suggestions and would gladly test (me, at least) beta quality BIOSes and provide information on the issue, but Lenovo never tried to co-operate with us, giving away what I think is less than a bit of information. To be honest, Lenovo simply failed answering any request,  even the most simplest ones, hiding under the "we cannot replicate" rock.

Having said that, let me repeat some questions for the engineers over there and for the N->infinity time:

- why is it working on battery? Can we try a beta BIOS where the fan control algorithm (and only that) is the same on AC and on battery;

- what about setting an intermediate RPM value of 3000 in the BIOS (it was there in 1.05)

- what about lifting up some of the thresholds that are used now.

I had many more, you can find them in older posts, and I think I deserve some answers, which are better not to be "no, no, no".  However, given past history, my bet is that I'll be ignored again and Lenovo will reply in a fortnight saying, guess what, "we cannot replicate the issue". Bah

I will send my system right now, as is.  I will only remove personal files.  Then you let the "engineering team" test the s*** out of it for as long as they need.  However, I will need a replacement for the time being, and I am currently in Antigua until the end of June.

I am very sorry you guys are having problems. At the same time I feel fortunate to have come across this forum, and in particular, this thread during my research for my next top of the line laptop.

My final thought: I will not purchase any Lenovo products in the future.

Mark-

You are incorrect. I am running windows, powermanger, and the latest BIOS. With these prerequsites you claim Lenovo engineering requires, I  did send in my laptop, however, as I've said (and never received a reply from a Lenovo Administrator), engineering proceeded to run VERY basic and superficial tests, and they determined that there is no problem with my laptop fan behavior. They ran heavyload for 5 minutes and shut it off and claimed the fan "behaved as it should", and they also started up the system and let it sit idle for 20 minutes and claimed no problems with the fan occured. The bottom line? They sent me back my laptop, and I've been stuck when an incredibly annoying fan that gets stuck at 4000rpm at least 3 times a day.

We have repeatedly said that the problem most often occurs after at least 1-2 hours of use and it is intermittent. It is also more likely to occur when plugged in than on battery. Furthermore, I just discovered while travelling outside the U.S. that when plugged into 220V, it occurs much more often.

The issue is that Lenovo engineering is not willing to spend ample time testing the T420s, they prefer a quick superficial test as they did with mine. 5 minutes running Heavy Load and 20 minutes idle? That's their test? Wow.

Take a look at the thread Mark. This many people cannot be wrong.

Re: T420s Fan noise Issue

i got a T420s with the i7 a week ago. i tried different settings, first i disabled the optimus and switched to the integrated graphic card. after that i set the powermanager for the fan control to maximize performance, the system temperature rises but the fan still running at low speed. the system temp ist between 40 and 50 °C while idle or just surfing, and the fan is not screaming.

this i guess is the best setting for me. can anyone confirm this, or has made the same experience?
