Week reminder:

Lenovo, you fail at answering legitimate questions asked by your users! There are tons of good suggestions posted in the last 10 pages that are still unaswered. Do something!

What did everyone decide on TPFC.62?

I downloaded it (I know nothing about computers) and didn't touch any of the settings.  I hope it's working on it's own.  The fan stopped (it says under State at 0, and under Speed at 0RPM) but I'm nervous my computer will break or something.  Is that all I had to do?  It was a great fix (I think?)

For the computer savvy, just let me know if what I did is very stupid.  If it isn't, I totally recommend it.  No more horrible headache-inducing sound.

Don't use TPFC .62, use TPFC .73ti (the W520 version). If you use TPFC .62, TPFC will ocasionally read an erronious temperature reading of 0C, causing the fan to turn off for a few seconds, even if the laptop is heavily loaded. The CPU heats up VERY quickly if the fan is turned off, and it could quickly heat up to damaging temperatures when this glitch occurs.

Also, uninstall the Lenovo power manager when using TPFC.

Lenovo  - can you get with it on this topic!?

I refuse to use a 3rd party bolt-on like TPFC to control my "state of the art" laptop T420s.  It sounds risky and doesn't it void the warranty???   I don't use TPFC on my T400s and it hums away like a dream.  What's the problem folks??

David44: I don't think TPFC will void the warranty. It makes no permanent changes to the hardware that Lenovo would notice, and a Lenovo staff member actually instructed us to use TPFC earlier in this thread.

It's likely that TPFC will reduce the lifespan of the system board, because it will run warmer with TPFC. However, it's likely that the system board was going to last far longer than you needed it to anyway.

In theory, it shouldn't be possible for TPFC to cause any acute damage, because the CPU automatically throttles itself as it approaches an overheat condition. You can see this happening if you begin a process that uses 100% CPU at full power -- the cooling fan in this laptop isn't even capable of removing enough heat in this situation, but the CPU will eventually stop heating up as it nears the design temperature limit.

You may be interesting this "Core Temp", you can monitor each core's temp on the task bar as well as system load. I have not tried the gadget but its also available. Highly recommended if you need/want real time monitoring of your CPU.

Personally I would not have the fan turn off at all in you settings. Temperature can rise quickly and even idle (supposidly) the CPU is hot to the touch.

Thank you JMSTUCKMAN and TRIPPLEC - I appreciate the comments & heads-up.

I really hate to do it, but I may have to give TPFC and the other monitoring software a try.

Thanks again - David

Just watch when installing Core Temp on this newer release. The installer will have tagged bloatware. You want to uncheck various bloatware it offers!!! Doing so and you save time cleaning it back out.

It looks like this running minimized on the taskbar. The center number is system load and the other two are the two individual cores. I am on a Core Duo HP at the moment.

Betreff: T420s Fan noise Issue

2012-04-14, 16:36 PM

My T420s is back from repair centre and the fan is functional once again. Unfortunately too functional as everybody except for Lenovo knows.

Actually I almost resigned and accepted the incredibly bad sound design but listening to some music on normal volume while surfing the web brought me back to a rage. It's beyond human belief how a company such as Lenovo is defiling the heritage of IBM's great machines.

I know that this probably is against forum rules but if this post gets criticized at least we know somebody of Lenovo is reading this:

We have to make this issue public. The only reason for Lenovo to care about people who already bought one of their faulty machines is financial-based. It doesn't bother Lenovo's management if this relatively small group here won't buy another Lenovo product.

But if bigger webpages with good reputation and influence would notice (and comment on!) this mortifying behaviour of Lenovo's customer support maybe their opinion could get changed!

Ideally those websites should be big business-related pages with a huge readership.

Is anyone over here who has connections to pages like that? Or is anybody an author himself?

Dan0,

Jamez can escalate issues directly as he is a Lenovo employee.   Once he has enough information to define the problem clearly with steps to recreate and system specifics of model, OS, drivers, and BIOS level, he can either recreate himself or create / escalate the case.

Our senior technical team will work the case and validate the symptoms and then pass to engineering and development as needed to obtain root cause and provide an update through drivers / bios as needed.

It is difficult to say exactly how long this process will take - can vary based on complexity of the issue, but typical the engineering cycle is around 4 weeks.  Sometimes faster, sometimes a bit longer.

Jamez often continues to collect information and receives updates from engineering .

Best regards,

@ Mark_Lenovo: Where is the progress on this issue? We are receiving again and again the same statements without any solution.

Betreff: T420s Fan noise Issue

It just seems to me that nobody at Lenovo product engineering takes pride in their work. Surely someone who designed the cooling system has heard of this issue, and surely someone who works for Lenovo has also been issued the T420s as a company laptop and noticed this issue. As a software developer, as soon as I hear of a widespread critical bug in my software, I jump into action to fix it, because I take pride in my work, and because I would like my work to be as close to perfect as possible. I am pretty close to getting a Samsung ultrabook as my next machine, something I would never even have considered just last year.
