Thanks JameZ! I've installed the new BIOS and will put it through its paces in the next few days. Thanks for your help with this - now we just gotta get the UltraNav fixed. One problem at a time ... :-)

New bios looked good for a while, but then the fan spun back up randomly to 4000rpm and is stuck there again, currently idling at 38*C and 4000rpm.

Almost there guys.

Ran prime for four minutes, cpu temp up top 96-97 degrees celcius, stopped prime, cpu temp at 57 degrees celcius, fan stuck at 3997 rpm for some minutes, went down to 3505rpm while typing this message.

(was coming here to rant about it being stuck at 4000 ;)

I'll report in after som more testing :)

@JameZ that's a good news, but:

What about other models? T420 specifically.

Thanks

On my machine ist works like the old one perhps the steps from the fan are a little smaler.

In a short test the fan goes to 2000rpm wenn the CPU is near the 40°C ~42°C but with the new Bios the fan does not puls at 2000rpm  :)

The rest is the sam as befor ~45-60°C  (3500rpm)  then  4000rpm and over 90°C 5000rpm   that are the values that TpFcontrol shows so the values varies around 100-200rpm

while writing this post CPU ~45°C  and fan at 3500rpm

Re: T420s Fan noise Issue

2011-09-08, 18:16 PM

Hello everybody,

I've been following this thread since the end of june, when I received my T420s (i5, 4GB, Nvidia NVS 4200M Optimus, Intel SSD 160GB). The fan noise and the bad display were the first things I noticed when I powered it up the first time. If there hadn't been such a great tool like 'tpfancontrol', I probably would have sent it back.

Most of the time, the fan rotates constantly at about 4000rpm, even if the system is idling at 37-38° CPU -temperature. Sometimes, after plugging the powersource on/off or changing the power-profile, the fan-speed drops to 2000rpm for a few seconds and returns to 4000rpm right away.

There has to be some bug in the bios, preventing the fan speed to adapt to the CPU-temperature or to jump out of the 4000rpm-mode, because strangely the adjusting to the temperature works quite well when it reaches 95°, then it switches to 5000rpm and back to 4000rpm as soon as it's below 90° again.

Edit: I'am using the latest software-updates (bios: 1.28, energy-manager: 3.62)

Please what are the correct settings in the Power Manager 3.62 for TP T420 and T420s.

Not on mine, unfortunately I'm still stuck at 4000 RPMs. Very :smileysad: and disappointing.

I'll give it some more tests in the next days, but it seems that it didn't solve it since I never see 3500 RPMs, ever.
