Re: T420s Fan noise Issue

Is it possible/OK to "downgrade" the BIOS?

I'm currently using BIOS 8CET48WW (1.28 ), but it does not solve

the fan speed problem for me, on Linux -- and, it reinstates a problem

I had before updating to 8CET36WW (1.13 ), namely:

mtrr: no more MTRRs available
[drm] MTRR allocation failed.  Graphics performance may suffer.

This was not an issue with 8CET45WW (1.25 ), but it has come

back with 1.28, so I'd like to "downgrade" if it's feasible.

According to my feeling the fan got louder with the new bios! Disappointing!

PS: JameZ, lenovo problably just has to wait to get the problem solved because in a few weeks all your customers/victims will have thrown this crap it out of the window - it is SO ANNOYING... I cannot work with it!!

Hello everyone,

I was just administrating my system, when I discovered some ACPI-Alerts in Windows 7's 'Event Viewer' which seem to happen everytime the system boots up. According to the log-message, the bios tries to access the EC (Embedded Controller) - which is among other things responsible for fan-control - without synchronizing with Windows and therefore this data will be ignored. Maybe that's a hint of what's going wrong.

Perhaps some of you could check, if this occurs on every t420. To do so, open the 'Event Viewer', go to 'Custom View' and select 'Administrative Events'. Here's a screenshot (i am using a german windows): http://s7.directupload.net/file/d/2646/rvhjbase_png

Greetings

I also get these messages in my event viewer. I've gotten them on various laptops that I've used, and I think they're harmless.I doubt that they have anything to do with fan control, because fan control algorithm appears to be independent of the OS you're using.

This is very interesting - but it doesn't really explain why the engineers have been unable to duplicate this problem. They run a Windows 7 machine in their labs, and if Windows 7 was having problems accessing their ECP also they should also be seeing high fan speeds.

The only variable that I've seen that actually affects the fan spinning seems to be the ambient temperature. Right now Stockholm is in a cooler period so my fan does regulate properly - I don't know how cold it is in my apartment, but it feels about 22-23 C.

I have a feeling that this has to be it. I work in two areas -- one is around 27C and one is around 21C. In the 27C area, the fan *always* spins at 4000 RPM, even after the CPU cools down. In the 21C area, the fan regulates normally. I have a feeling that the Lenovo engineers are working in a cool room, and because the moderators already admitted that they never read this forum (Chinese speaking engineers probably...) they aren't doing the tests in a warmer room.

It's sort of a shame -- I used to work at the IBM facility in Rochester, Minnesota next door to the Thinkpad thermal/acosutics lab. There were some really smart guys working there who tested laptops such as the T40 and T60. In the years since the Lenovo takeover, though, they probably moved that engineering task to a non-English-speaking country, and the new guys can't read this forum or spend time researching the fan problem...

@All,

As a temp workaround do use the TPF to control the fan speed for now. Also appreciate if someone could volunteer their system to the US lab... The previous volunteer is not responding to my emails.

I just installed the newest Bios.   The fan spun up over 4000 RPM and stayed there.   I just installed TPFan control and it shows the CPU temp at 39', fan at 4200.   I manually spun the fan down to 2000 RPM and the temp went to 41C.   These are problems I would expect on HP or the cheap Dell I could buy at Walmart, not a $1500 CUSTOM BUILD machine.

jmstuckman,

We've always had engineering teams in multiple locations - development for ThinkPad still has a core group in RTP, NC and in Japan just as always.   I started with IBM in 1993 and have known many of those involved with ThinkPad and many are still here.   I don't feel like this is an outsource issue.  There may be multiple things going on...

All,

Based on the reaction here, it seems to me that the BIOS didn't resolve fan issues for everyone.  The post is no longer marked as solved, and it would help to have a sample system here in the US that has the latest BIOS and PM and exhibits the high speed fan even when system temps are low.

Any volunteers?   Please contact Jamez or myself.  We definitely want to get this solved.

Mark

Is living in the U.S. still a requisite for volunteering? I am based in Italy and I'll gladly help, but I do not know whether you need laptops from Europe.

Thanks for the helpful words, Mark. The situation may not be as bad as I had feared (although you're probably aware that the changes of the past 10 years have made many US IBMers and ex-IBMers quite pessimistic regarding this issue.)

I'll consider volunteering my laptop, although I wouldn't be able to send it until the beginning of October. It's my personal machine, and not a corporate machine that I could easily replace with a spare. Do you send a loaner laptop in this situation?

I am able to repoduce the problem very reliably with the factory installation, as long as the room temperature is around 80F. The problem is almost never reproducable at lower ambient temperatures (say 74F), despite identical CPU workload and power management settings.
