jmstuckman,

We've always had engineering teams in multiple locations - development for ThinkPad still has a core group in RTP, NC and in Japan just as always.   I started with IBM in 1993 and have known many of those involved with ThinkPad and many are still here.   I don't feel like this is an outsource issue.  There may be multiple things going on...

All,

Based on the reaction here, it seems to me that the BIOS didn't resolve fan issues for everyone.  The post is no longer marked as solved, and it would help to have a sample system here in the US that has the latest BIOS and PM and exhibits the high speed fan even when system temps are low.

Any volunteers?   Please contact Jamez or myself.  We definitely want to get this solved.

If you can send it back with a 256gb SSD, I will mail it in tomorrow.

@JameZ

Sorry if I missed an answer to this, but: if I've updated to

BIOS 1.28, is it possible to backdate to version 1.25 by

re-running the older installer, or will that screw things

up? Thanks. (As I mentioned, 1.28 brings back a video

problem on Linux -- and maybe on Windows XP?)

I just got my T420S a few hours ago. Hook it up to power and has been working great and never really noticed the fan noise. Until I plugged off the power cord and suddenly heard the noise. Its not as loud as my previous Toshiba fan noise (not even close) but it has this high pitch squeaking sound. Its like putting a wire through your ears. I can bear with a louder spinning noise but not this sqeuaking sound. Its annoying.

Hello, I have my T420s (4176A14) since 2-3 days. All the time the fan are at 4k rpm. Only when I go in the NVidia parameters with the turning 3D logo the fan stop or turn slowly. I use the programm TPFancontrol with succes.

Does anybody know what the difference is between Smart Mode 1 and Smar Mode 2 in TP Fan Control?

Rather than using the Smart Mode 1 or Smart Mode 2 built into TPFanControl, you should write your own configuration file based on the normal temperatures you've observed your system running it. Please refer to previous posts in this thread for several suggested TPFanControl temperature profiles.

As a temp workaround do use the TPF to control the fan speed for now. Also appreciate if someone could volunteer their system to the US lab... The previous volunteer is not responding to my emails.

Sorry for the late response, have been super busy at work and was sucked in.

I have updated the latest BIOS and this has not solved the issue. I am still willing to ship the laptop if it will help fix the issue.

Re: T420s Fan noise Issue

I am now reading and posting here for almost 4 months, got mine in May

after all, there is no solution. It won't be only a bios fix: the fan has a high pitch whining

sound and drives everybody completely nuts.

THE FAN MUST BE EXCHANGED - STOP looking for BIOS workarounds,

Lenovo just does not want to service with FOC FANs. There wont't be

any commitment to a real solution because they know exactly this

is a misdesing an nobody wants to pay the cost.

WE ALL BOUGHT A FAULTY UNIT ARE LEFT BEHIND - Lenovo took the money

and that's it.

Sorry, big big big dissapointment.
