Betreff: T420s Fan noise Issue

2011-11-15, 4:01 AM

@all

it seems that the new version of 1.30 reduce the fan noise. My t420s is i7+ nvs 4200 display card, it seems that the fan is  about 2000RPM if temperature below 50 ℃, and about 3500RPM above 50 ℃, but it is not the acurrate speed, sometimes the speed of fan is bwetween 2000-3000PRM.

btw, my laptop is 4173RA5 type with 3.62 power management, and the version of display card is 8.17.12.6871. In power manger, the mode for system performance is balance, and I tried the "turbo", it seems no change

I am kind of satified with such update, but  I think 3500RPM is a little noisy at night, and the temperature is easy to reach 50 ℃ for i5/i7 CPU processor, so maybe an improved for such details is much better

anyway it is not always 4000RPM, I suggest guys try this update

omg - don't know what it was, but I uninstalled TPFC and now: silence. Will see if it is still the same, when I turn on my computer the next time but Bios 1.30 finally seems to work for me. That's just great!

This sums up my experience with the new bios. It's no longer stuck on 4000 rpm but still regulary throttles up to 3500 when my laptop is above 50c. The strange thing is when i first got my t420s over the summer the core temp was always mid 30C and the fan was almost always off. Now, in the winter when it's much cooler in my house the temp is routinely 50C+ on idle. Could the thermal protection have worn down over the past few months?

That did the trick :smileyhappy:. After updating bios and power manager, my system finally behaves as one would expect. Under high load the fan is noisy, but returns to the barely audible setting under minimal load. Although I appreciate that a solution has been found, I feel the process of getting here has been way too long :smileymad:... I am otherwise very happy with the system - although 64 bit win 7gives quite a few compability headaces. I will probably "upgrade" to 32 bit win 7...

My results:

CPU temp. above 50C> fan 4K RPM

CPU temp. above 45C> fan 3.5K RPM
CPU temp below 42C> fan 2K RPM

Environment temp. 22-23C

It is very annoying because I get noise every few minutes on the clock.

Exact the same here, now i Uninstall TPF control, but at the moment that makes no difference.

On battery with CPU at "balanced" it stays at 40°C that is ok, at home I have to test it later.

I'm a bit behind the curve here- can you tell me what software I should use to observe fan speed//rpms and temperature? Thanks.

Just loaded Bios 1.30 and Power manager 3.64. Fan is running on medium speed under a very light load. Hope it adjusts. If not, back to the drawing board for Lenovo engineering.

Thanks Roy. I'm assuming I just download it from here: http://www.hwinfo.com/download64.html

Completely safe right?
Thanks again
