Re: T420s Fan noise Issue

I also noitce no improvement at all. BIOS 1.30, Power Manager 3.64 and my fan is STILL stuck at 4000RPM. Mine is the integrated GPU model (i5-2520). Seriously, I don't think Lenovo is going to fix this problem.

@All,

Appreciate if everyone could check if TurboBoost in the Power Manager (Basic) is enabled.

Same here. It's disabled but my fan is stuck at 4K RPM.  If I enable it, fan spins even faster (~5K RPM).

Lenovo Turbo Boost+ (which seems to be my only 'Turbo Boost' option) is disabled, and has been all the time. Still, the fan is stuck at 4K after I updated to 1.30. It's actually unbearable, so until a real solution is found, I'd appreciate the option of downgrading back to 1.29.

Re: T420s Fan noise Issue

We have bought the set of T420s devices and now we are testing little bit. Fan work almost correct but it looks sometimes after some hours it looks then fan is not going down with RPM correctly, but only sometimes. But what we have found out using tpfancontrol, if we set mode manual and set value 7 (max), on one device it goes to max RPM cca 4600, on second same machine, same BIOS it goes on same settings of tpfancontrol to max RPM cxca 5200. This is for us really strange and might indicate that same machines are working really little bit different in question of fan control. What is you MAX RPM in tpfancontrol, mode manula, value 7 ?

Re: T420s Fan noise Issue

My turbo boost has always been disabled. Enabling it causes the fan to go over 5000rpm.

After updates from Jamez, (1.30, and 3.64)  MY FAN IS STILL STUCK AT 4000 RPM!!!

Come on Lenovo, give us a real solution. Clearly a BIOS update will not work. RECALL the T420s and rebuild them.

@pleon

There are diferent Fans in the Computers.

My fan was change by a Lenovo Technikan, an he says that there was an update. The new fan has a max from 5k and not the 4,5k? and the steps wenn using TPF control are different too ( Manual: 2 , has an different fan speed at the new fan then at the old one)

Yeahh correct, we have different RPM in TPF for value 2 (and for other values), so it really looks that we have different fans inside, even if we have same delivery date, it was same order and we have almost same serial number, only last character of serial number is different, i have V at end, coleague has P at end. We did one another test. We run PRIME95 stress tool, set same configuration and same settings in power manager. During stress test, after several minutes on my device, CPU temp is stabilised on cca 91 and RPM 4000, coleague CPU temp also 91, but on RPM 5000. So it looks, on both devices fans cools CPU to same temperature, but each fan use different RPM, my device keeps 91 degrees using RPM 4000, coleagues fan keeps temp 91 using RPM 5000.

Can someone please post where to download TPFan control?

I have been avoiding using it in fear of damaging the CPU, but given that I only use my T420s for light work it should be fine.

I downloaded what I thought was TPFan control but it didn't have an executable program to install, just a bunch of nonsense files.
