I couldn't agree more that Lenovo should really do something by now. Thread pages going over 64 (over 6 months) and still no real solution? Is this a joke?

@Julian_Think:

I think you are correct, there must have been a change in the fan model/type.  People from earlier (May/June) in the post are complaining of a: loud/vacuum-like/wheeze/irritating sound.  Upgrading from my old T61, my new machine (T420s-4170 w/Optimus) has a build date of Oct 10th.  Yes the fan does spin at 4000 constant on high performance mode, and <1500 on low power.  However, I must say that the fan is still fairly quiet even at 5500rpm.  Anyone have any idea which fans they are using that might be causing the problem?  I have no idea which fan is in my machine as there are 2 options for Optimus.

As per the HMM for T420s and T420si, here are the fan options:

18 Fan assembly, UMA Toshiba 04W0416
18 Fan assembly, UMA AVC 04W1712
18 Fan assembly, Optimus Toshiba 04W0417
18 Fan assembly, Optimus AVC 04W1713

Yes, everything is updated.

re: T420s Fan noise Issue

I have also had the loud fan noise, and I have been following this thread for a month now waiting for a fix.

I have a 4170-32U, build date of 11/04. I installed the updated BIOS and put everything on balanced, updated Power Manager and made sure TurboBoost is off, and my fan still whines loudly constantly.

The fan is very loud, I'm getting very frustrated by this, and am considering a warranty return now.

Is there any outlook for an actual fix for this issue?

Appreciate if everyone could check if TurboBoost in the Power Manager (Basic) is enabled.

No, never even used it.

That's exactly what they must have done! My computer runs at least10 degrees warmer. Fan is still annoying though if throttles up and down instead of constantly on 4k.

When I first got my computer the fan was silent no matter how hard I pushed it and only after I upgraded the drivers did the fan issue occur. They must know the cause.

Exactly the same symptoms. This is why I believe some combinations of software might make it work silently AND stay relatively cold, because I definitely had that at the very beginning of my ownership.

@All,

Engineering has tested on the T420s at their end and the BIOS 1.30 indeed did help slow the fan down when the laptop is on idle and speed up when the laptop is on load.

I would require a volunteer's machine which is stuck at 4k RPM despite idle to be sent in to engineering.

For those who are unable to send the machine in, appreciate if you can drop me a private message with the machine's MTM and S/N. For those who already did, thank you.

My fan is still stuck at 4000 rpm so I have given in and installed TPfan control. Can someone please tell me the maximum temperature I should allow? My machine seems to go between 45c-53c. I just want to make sure I don't damage my CPU by letting it get too hot.

TPFan control provides a temperature reading, but I also have HWinF064 which seems to give a different reading by as much as 2 degrees. Which should I refer to?

Again, please let me know the maximum temperature I should allow.

Thanks

@JameZ:

On-site technical support has been working on my computer for an unrelated reason, and during that process, the video cable was damaged so now my computer doesn't have a display. As soon as they fix it, I'll check the fan performance again and get back to you.

@All: My fan is an AVC fan 04W1712 - I have a T420s 4170 (regular integrated graphics)

@calkeneth - How did you find out which model your fan is? Did you have to open the laptop?
