Thanks Peednus, got the link to 1.29. I installed, but unfortunately it seemed to be even more loud and aggressive than 1.30. Also, 1.29 caused my computer to suddenly shut down (scren just went black and then shut down), which had me quite worried. So now I'm back to 1.30 with TPfan Control.

Something tells me Lenovo won't be able to resolve this problem any time soon.

Sorry to hear that, it seems very odd...  The only precaution I took while downgrading the driver was to kill all running programs.  The BIOS updated, and upon restart, it flashed correctly.  Right now at 52 degrees C, its running at 3500...  Could also be a fan manufacturer problem.

@JameZ: any update on volunteers or from the engineering group? Were the Serial Numbers useful for findining a pattern of mis-behaving models?

My new T420s arrived today and sadly seems to have this same issue:

Manufacture date 2011-10-22 - model 4174-BM1

I'm running Ubuntu with latest bios (1.30) fan stays ~4000rpm constantly on both AC and battery.

I strongly recommend you send the engineering disaster known as the T420s back to Lenovo while you still can. If I was still within the 21 day return period I certainly would. Instead, I'm stuck hearing a vacuum cleaner like whine for 10 hours a day.

Thanks for giving up Lenovo, we appreciate it. After all, these computers only cost close to $2000.

I got this problem when my laptop is on A/C adapter, seem ok on battery for now.

If temperature go over 45°C, fan stays ~4000 RPM constantly whatever temperature evolve.

Bios 1.3

Type: 4171-CTO

I think you're talking about a Core i5 model?

Here in Switzerland the price tag for the i7 model with SSD and 4Gb RAM is at 3'000 swiss francs and up!

If Ihandn't had a 50% discount from my university I wouldn't be here posting, I'd have returned it the first week.

this is sooooo much of a bad publicity for Lenovo, they just turned number one laptop sellers world wide. Guess this is not going to last!

Cheers
