Re: re: T420s Fan noise Issue

Hello Jamez,

Here's a problem report that you can pass to engineering:

1. Working environment - quiet room, fan is noisy

2. Laptop idle fan speed - 3987RPM

3. Room temp - 21.5 C

5. Laptop temp - CPU 39C

6. Temp software used - HWiNFO32

Machine: 4170CTO

BIOS version: 1.30

Configuration: Docked, one external monitor

Graphics: Intel only

When first powered on, the fan will cycle normally. However, eventually, the fan speed will get "stuck" at 4000RPM regardless of load or temperature. If I sleep the laptop and immediately wake it, the fan speed drops down to a normal speed (2000RPM, quiet fan). So, at some point, the laptop enters a state where the fan speed is stuck at 4000RPM, and putting the laptop into sleep mode (and immediately waking it) clears the "stuck" state and brings the fan control back to normal (until the problem reoccurs).

Sometimes I have the same Problem, there is no reoson and the fan goes to 4k and don't come down as normal.

A nother point is that the fan goes from 2k to 3.5k wenn the CPU is at 45°C or more. I think on 1.29 Bios that Point was at 55°C ?

I think at 45°C it is not neserary to spin up the fan to 3.5K rpm

Here is another one with the issues described above. It is hard to believe that the loud fan is a "works as designed". I mean didn't they test the first prototype properly before it went into mass production? If their product management really thought sitting next to a hair dryer for 8h+ a day is cool then I am really disappointed because Thinkpads used to be the notebooks you could recommend to others blindly.

If, on the other hand, only certain faulty models show this behavior it would be nice to get this confirmed by Lenovo. I would send mine in the next day to get it fixed or replaced.

I don't really like the idea of having to rely on the software based fan control because I would be out of warranty if some chip melts months later. The graphics chip on my last T61 died after 3 years (Nvidia bug).

So, are there any people out there that can work with their T420s (w/ or w/o 2nd monitor) for a whole day without noticing a loud fan? I guess they would not read this thread...

I can work with one external Monitor, at normal Officework the CPU is around 50-55°C and the fan spinnes at 3.5k. So that is not realy quiet but better than 4k.

But I think a bit more than Word and Exel cut it be, bevore the fan goes to 4k

Backdate the Bios then...

Scroll down to near the bottom, and pick your poison..

Jamez,

Really, this thread is seven months old, and I have a $1400 laptop that sounds like a hairdryer. What can we do about this? I am so, so incredibly frustrated with this, I am genuinely ready to get another laptop.

JameZ,

Here I am on a new T420S that this fan is driving me nuts it is so ridiculously loud and I get the feeling after I finish these 70+ pages nothing can or will be done about it.

No external monitor and not doing anything except typing.

So, why not tell me how I can repackage this unit and send it back.

It will save time.

Here are a few pictures to support our point. It was recorded with sensord and rrdtool (on Linux):

The temperature of the last few hours after a cool start:

Last few hours temp

The data points are taken in 5-minute intervals.

The Fan speed of the last few hours:

Last few hours Fan Speed

After switching it on this morning there was a short period of 2000 rpm (I believe also 2 - 3 minutes of 3.5 k) fan speed before it reached 4k.

The temperature of the last 24h:

Daily Temperature

In the picture above you can see a period of high temperature due to a stuck process. During the night hours my computer was switched off. Hence no data during this period.

Fan speed of the last 24h:

Daily Fan Speed

The fan speed remains constant at 4k except the brief period (ca. 15 minutes) after a cool start.

Question to Lenovo: Is it supposed to look like that? What temperatures/fan speeds did you see during your tests?

This is a great job. It summarizes perfectly the behaviour I am seeing. 4000 RPM, ever!

Any news on this? Is there any engineer out there?
