Re: T420s Fan noise Issue

2012-02-16, 9:21 AM

hi all

I'm new here. The reason why I'm writing is because I was actually considering buying a T420s. But after this HUGE thread about all the trouble with the fan I'm reconsidering.

So here's my questions:

- Does the problem persist with the later units? Maybe they have stopped putting bad screens and bad fans into the newer machines. Does anyone actually have a T420s with this noise problem which was bought in 2012?

- and besides: would anyone recommend me NOT to buy the T420s at all?

I have an old machine, hence I have no idea if the problem has been somehow solved with later releases. However, since the culprit most certainly is the BIOS, I suspect that you might have problems also with newer hardware.

Having said that, I think that the T420s is a great machine, apart for the fan behaviour. This is the reason why I keep complaining, since solving this issue would turn my noisy laptop into a machine that is very close to what I consider ideal.

If you can, I recommend waiting a few months for Ivy Bridge equipped products. They might come with a smarter BIOS. My advice is to wait for a new model and not buy the T420s.

Another good reason to skip the T420s is that Lenovo doesn't seem to care about this model anymore. We haven't heard anything official from them for many weeks, despite this topic is approaching a thousand replies :(

@alexcriss: No, no updates from Lenovo. I've PM'ed Mark_Lenovo a few times but have not received any responses. I just PM'ed him again and will let you know if he responds. Mark_Lenovo did say Engineering noticed an issue with my fan, so hopefully something comes about because of it. They have had my laptop for close to a month now...

@jasona: Thanks very much for the update, I really appreciate your feedback! It is somehow uplifting knowing that they still have your laptop (maybe not for you). It gives a feeling of "We are still trying to fix this and we didn't give up yet", if only they tried harder and faster ;)

Mark's in box generally runs into the hundreds, PMs he has requested members to send him are prioritised.

I'm curious, did you send your machine with your hard drive and personal data or did you send a completely different drive?  If the latter, was the new Windows installation also exhibiting the 4000+ rpm fan issue?

If the issue is in fact attributed to the BIOS and sensors as has been suggested, then the OS installation should not matter much.

All,

The engineers were still looking at Jasona's system.   I've asked status earlier this week - I know that we had seen some of the symptoms on this particular system after having taken out and preserved his Linux HDD and having set up a Windows drive.

As I recall, with the preload we weren't seeing issues but after applying all updates, we were seeing some unexpected fan behaviors.  I'm not sure where we are in isolating it.   I'll check today and see what further developments there are.

I also owe Jason a personal follow up.

Mark

Thanks Mark, news are always appreciated. Let's hope that the engineering team succeded at finding what makes our fan crazy.

Could you also comment whether the engineering team tried using the Linux install of Jason's HDD or not? It would be very beneficial for us Linux users if they could have a look at it!

Mark, thanks for the update. That's exactly the issue. My T420s was whisper quiet when I first got it over the summer but a month later when I decided to upgrade to the newer bios and drivers, from that moment on my t420s ran hotter and sounded like an aircraft engine. They really need to fix this issue!

Re: T420s Fan noise Issue

I would echo Alexcriss from Italy - hold off on the T420s and newer Lenovo models.  Note that I also have a T400s that is fantastic and the envy of many other traveling SAP consultants.  I was expecting the same with the T420s when I bought it in June, but it now sits at home b/c it is too loud and gives me a headache after 30 minutes.  I'm sure the people on my flights are also very happy the T420s is not on the plane.

Lenovo has really disappointed me.  BMW had a problem with their new 335i engine in 2008, but like a professional, responsible company, they proactively corrected an issue with a fuel pump (twice since 2009).  BMW was good/fair to their customers who expect more from a company that claims to build one of the world's best performing sedans.  Agreed, car safety and laptop fans are not in the same category.  However Lenovo is no where near world class in my book after this episode with the T420s.

Ok, rant over, but the T420s could be great and allow my poor old T400s to retire if only Lenovo would cooperate with the smart folks (from all over the world!) on this thread who have gone above & beyond the duty of a customer to help identify the problem and even help resolve the problem with the laptop.
