Are your BIOS and drivers up to date? The fan bug should have been fixed by now.

Are you serious? Please read at least some of the last posts in this thread and you will notice how wrong your statement is!

by the way: a lot of users complained about the fan issue AFTER a bios and driver update...

I just realized the sensor sometimes gives wrong readings, some times it gives 200 degree but quicky come back to normal. I begin to doubt if this is a hardware issue instead of a bios problem.

The T420 fan speed should have been addressed by BIOS.

The T420s showed somewhat mixed results and we are still looking at some of that.   Please, let's not cross post between these two thread.

xzhou,  please only post on the T420s thread here.. (I see one of the mods moved your messages from the T420 (non S) thread here...

Also, if your temp readings are wildly innaccurate (think you reported 200 degrees) then it sounds like something else is wrong with your system and it may be best to contact service.

Thanks

What is latest bios for t420s? Does it also solve the problem of low led pwm frequency? Thanks.

Mark: The problem with occasional, wildly inaccurate temperature readings (such as 10C or 200C) is a common one, and I don't think it represents a hardware fault. Rather, I think it's due to an incompatibility between the newer Thinkpad models and common 3rd-party programs (such as TPFanControl) that end-users are using to monitor temperature. It appears that IBM/Lenovo never provided end-users with a sanctioned way to monitor or control temperatures/fan speed, so the popular temperature monitoring software resorts to undocumented I/O to the embedded controller which can change from one model to the next.

Please do not confuse this issue with the T420s fan speed problem. Most users with this problem are running the stock Windows 7 installation with no third-party hacks.

However, this issue does *aggravate* the fan control problem, because the old Thinkpad fan control hacks work poorly on the T420s (due to missing/stuck/inaccurate temperature readings.) This also makes it difficult for us to generate debug info that would be useful for your engineering team, because we can't tell if our fan problem is correlated with high GPU temperatures or similar symptoms.

Not absolute. Mine is integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000, but still gets fan noise when CPU temperature > 45deg. It seems the computers with nvidia are more likely to get fan stuck.  As discussed before, the fan speed is not only related to the CPU temperature.

Lucky you, sunan! My CPU temperature is at 36 degrees, and the fan has been stuck at 4200RPM, blowing a jet of cold air all day long.

If I only had fan noise when my CPU temperature was above 45deg, then I would be a satisfied customer. (I also have the integrated Intel graphics.)

The 45deg is only the trigger, by no means the fan will stop when the tmperature goes back to 45deg, sometimes need to be 41deg, or 39deg, even 37deg. So I use TPFancontrol all the time. I think you need it too.

Same here. When I start may machine, the temperature is around 40c, the fan is OK. but once it goes up more than 45c, the fan spins at >4000rmp and never slows down.

Well it doesn't help that my T420s can't stay cooler than 47c even on idle right after startup. I use the Lenovo dock which means the nvidia chip is always on and makes the CPU hot enough to always have 4k fan blowing. The slightest activity like opening the web browser makes the temp go into he 60s. The fan noise is awful.

Does your machine behave the same way when it's sitting on the desk with the BIOS Config | Display | Graphics set to NVIDIA?
