T420s USB 3.0 port not working

2011-12-10, 12:44 PM

Hi all,

We have a Lenovo T420s with the blue colored USB 3.0 port not working.  If I plug any flash drive into this port, it simply won't light up or respond.  All the other USB ports on the laptop are working fine.

Any advice would be much appreciated.  Thanks

Yes; try downloading the Renesas USB 3.0 driver.

If that doesn't work, boot into Safe Mode and see if it works there.

I have the same problem.  I have loaded the drivers and according to Device Mgr, they are loaded and working with no errors.  When I pluggin a 3.0 USB External Drive, it lights up but Windows 7 Enterprize N does not recognize it.  No  beeps, no dings, nothing.  It doesn't show up in "Disk Manager" either.  I tried right clicking on the USB 3.0 device (in device mgr) and selecting "Update Driver..." but it tells me I'm running the latest.  Lenovo even came out to replace the motherboard, didn't solve the problem.  Please help if you can.  Thx.

Did you install http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS015025 on Windows 7 ???  Do you see "Renesas Electronics" under the Start | All Programs area?  When you run the USB 3.0 Host Controller Utility, what information does it display?

I believe one of the recommendations I've seen made from time to time is to check the box that says "Disable USB 3.0 power management functions."

Installing the drivers, even though it already said that they were installed, solved this issue for me. I have used the USB3-port for USB3 flash drives, but it did not work with the LaCie external USB3 drive until I installed the drivers. Perhaps the correct drivers are needed to enable more power on the port.

Sounds familiar...

When I first installed the OS it also doesn't work... actually it's working sometimes, especially the first time after (re)installing the driver. All I need to do is to open up device manager, and with the USB device plugged in, "disable" the USB 3.0 XHCI, then "re-enable" it. Then the drive will be detected.

Also check the UEFI BIOS option: to enable XHCI instead of auto.

After I used the machine for a while, the problem disappears. Perhaps buggy Intel drivers...

Re: T420s USB 3.0 port not working

I had this problem too, super annoying to have only 2 out of 3 USB ports working nevermind the lack of USB 3.0 speed.  When I tried to install the drivers, whether from the Lenovo site or the Renesas site, the installer just stalled and never finished.

Here's what I did to install the drivers and fix the USB 3.0 port on my T420S, I hope this will help someone else:

  • Enabled power to USB at all times in the Bios, press F1 at boot up (not sure if this made any difference)
  • Modified the registry to start the MSI installer service in Safe Mode, add key to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SafeBoot\Minimal\ with name "MSIServer" and value "Service" (no quotes). See this article.
  • Booted into Safe Mode, press F8 at boot up
  • Installed driver from Lenovo site in Safe Mode (download this before entering Safe Mode)

Hope this works for someone else, good luck!
