T420s USB 3 port operating at USB 2 speed

2011-05-27, 13:52 PM

My first post! Delighted with my new T420s (4174), beautiful machine. However I can't get my USB 3 external drive to connect at full speed. I've definitely got the correct cable and tested the unit on a Dell desktop and it worked fine. On the ThinkPad the Windows message "This USB Mass Storage Device can transfer information faster if you connect it to a Super-Speed USB 3.0 port" is popping up and the drive performs as slowly as if it were plugged into one of the other USB 2 ports. All drivers are bang up-to-date, no errors in Device Manager.

All help appreciated!

Resolved - it was the caddy. Tried with a new PROBOX enclosure and it's working perfectly.

I would probably download and re-install the USB 3.0 driver at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-77006 just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for response TH. I've just done this and unfortunately it's had no effect - still getting the message. I've also tried removing all USB devices from Device Manager and allowing Windows to reinstall them, then running the USB 3 installer and restarting. No joy. Is there anything else I can try? Thanks all.

Can you test the speed with another external drive of other manufacturer?

Yep, I've tried this. Still get the message telling me that the device could perform faster if I connected it to a USB 3 port. Also tried my drive in a Dell laptop and it works at full speed.

Sorry, should have said "connected to the USB 3 port on a Dell laptop"

Correction - it didn't work with the Dell. The message wasn't popping up but when we looked a bit closer the performance was still at USB2 levels. It must be the hard drive caddy that's at fault. If I find a solution (or even a caddy that works!) I'll post it here.

Hi,

have the exact same problem, but with a standard issue Wester Digital MyPassport 500GB drive. Also get the info bubble about that the drive supports USB 3.0.. Strange one would think that WD would test their caddys before shipping.

Anyone else haveing problems with WD or any other brands?

Hi

Exactly the same problem, same hard drive! Have no idea what is causing the problem.
